Policy Enabling Healthspan: The NHS Long Term Plan
I'm excited to share what the UK is doing to support healthy ageing...
The NHS Long Term Plan prioritises "Ageing Well"—moving away from siloed, reactive treatment toward prevention, early intervention, and support for independence.
This matters. Policy shapes possibility.
When healthcare systems are designed around healthspan—not just disease management—everything changes. Preventive approaches, holistic support, community integration, and person-centred care create pathways for people to thrive, not just survive.
But here's the thing: policy on paper isn't enough. Real change happens when frontline practitioners, older adults, and communities co-design solutions that work in practice.
This is why I'm researching how holistic approaches can be integrated into NHS pathways. I want to understand what works, what doesn't, and how we can build sustainable models that serve everyone.
The vision is clear. The opportunity is real. But we need to do this together—with GPs, social prescribers, therapists, and most importantly, with older adults themselves.
What would it take for policy to truly enable healthspan in your community? What changes would make the biggest difference? I'd love to hear your thoughts. 💙
