🐴 Minnie Salt Therapy Case Study - COPD 🐴
On the 3rd December 2024 Minnies owner did the usual night checks to find Minnie heaving, whistling and in distress! The vet was called out and diagnosed an asthma attack. Steroid medication was administered which cleared it, however, 2 weeks later Mini was back heaving! The vet advised no more steroids due to laminitis risk and was given x2 inhalers to use, no improvement found.
Now into January with still no improvement, steroids given again which cleared all for a week but then sadly back to heaving and whistling again. A nebuliser medication was given by the vet and it was found that some days were okay and some days were still very bad.
Mini couldn’t be ridden and was still heavily suffering even after the use of medication after medication.
Welfare discussions were starting to happen…
April 2025 - Salt therapy was carried out - 6 day course followed by top up sessions close together, slowly increasing the frequency between visits to now every 2 weeks and Minnie is coping well in-between sessions!
Minnie’s owners were extremely worried when I arrived and I could see why. She was suffering and owners reported she’s lost her character. A few days into the therapy, Minnie’s character came back through, wow! What a different pony I was introduced to. Her owners were delighted to see this return!
Owners words -
“After loads of researching, I came across salt therapy so finally in April a lovely lady called Kelly came to see Minnie and did a 6 day intensive salt therapy treatment, at first I was unsure but saw improvements after 2/3 sessions and by day 5 I could see a significant change in her breathing.
With the salt therapy opening and cleaning her lungs, the medication seemed to have got in better. Kelly was shocked at how bad her breathing was and thought it would take a while to get a consistent level of breathing. Kelly was fantastic always contacting me asking how she is doing and popping in doing treatments to suit and we talked about riding her again which I didn’t think was anytime soon but come mid April after salt therapy on top of her medication we took Minnie hacking and it was amazing to see her out! In May she was back at a show and got placed 3rd! We are working with the vets to lower medication and continue top ups of salt therapy!”
Minnie has been doing well, she has been ridden again, she has been to a show and has been placed 3rd!
Worrying talks of welfare and doing the right thing, soon turned into “so when’s the next show” which is a wonderful outcome for all involved…
Well done to her owners, the effort they put in to get Minnie right is outstanding and I’m pleased to have been apart of this miracle journey because all lives matter!
