Not only does music therapy reduce stress, but it also inspires reminiscence, communication, social activity, movement and improves cognitive skills. This is essential for those living with dementia as it can instil a sense of identity and positive memories. Music workshop is our favourite activity at Ashbourne lodge singing along to our favourite songs, it’s very hard to end the activity when we need to because everyone is joining it so much.

⭐️ What is your favourite song to sing along to, let us know in the comments we’d love to know⭐️

Another busy few days of activities here at Ashbourne Lodge and we kicked off the morning with several games of musical bingo… so eyes down and ears open, not forgetting to sing along to the songs. This is such an enjoyable activity from singing along, being competitive and having a giggle. It’s also really good for dexterity, concentration, and socialising.

Getting those creative juices flowing with some fantastic artwork and craft work. We really enjoy painting and being creative here at Ashbourne lodge, and we certainly do have some fantastic artists 🧑🏻‍🎨 who really don’t know how good they are. This activity is important for dexterity, thinking skills, movement and lots of praise and conversation going on. Our group get togethers are always special and rewarding

Nothing like an afternoon of playing board games especially in the gloomy weather. Our residents get very competitive and really enjoy playing games against each other and playing games they’ve never played before. Playing games is important to keep the mind sharp, concentration, dexterity and having a bit of fun.

⭐️ what was your favourite board game as a child? Leave your answer in the comments, we would love to hear all your answers ⭐️

Kicking off this very wet and windy weekend with word games. Participating in word games is very important for anyone but particularly senior for people, as this will help with memory, communication & speech, sharper brain and thinking. We do like a good word challenge here at Ashbourne Lodge

⭐️ what a packed week of activities at Ashbourne Lodge ⭐️
Everyone’s favourite seems to be our music workshop, playing all our favourite songs, singing along and some even having a little dance.
We listen to everything from Elvis Presley, ABBA, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, John Denver and many more. They still know all the words to all the songs and and prompts lots of memories. The smiles we see when doing our music sessions is just wonderful and how it can lift moods.
Music is very important to everyone but more so for those living with Dementia as it can trigger memories, evoke emotions and improve their mood by reaching parts of the brain that other communications can’t reach.

🌟 This Week at Ashbourne Lodge: Learning, Sharing & Connecting 🌟
We’re halfway through an incredible week with students from the University of Nottingham – School of Pharmacy, who have joined us on placement to deepen their understanding of dementia care and experience our Montessori-inspired approach in action.
From lively conversations to creative activities, these future pharmacists are discovering how person-centred care makes a real difference. Together with our residents, they’ve explored unique British traditions – like crafting Corn Dollies and uncovering the fascinating story behind Jack-O’-Lanterns. (Did you know this tradition began in 16th-century Ireland with a blacksmith named Jack and a carved turnip?)
This week is all about connection – students learning from the wisdom of our residents, and residents enjoying the energy and curiosity of the next generation. It’s a beautiful reminder that care is not just about health, but about community, culture, and purpose.

💬 What traditions are unique where you’re from? Share them in the comments – we’d love to hear your stories!
