Start by not waiting until January!
Sounds obvious but if you start in December, you will experience the benefits one month earlier than if you start in January.
I know that there are many people who want to experience the physical and mental health benefits a regular yoga practice, but who cannot commit to a weekly class. I also know that there are others who have never joined a class because of lack of confidence or worries about being a beginner in a class of experienced yogis. So it’s a month now since I started this group.
I know that quite a few of you have already made a start with the beginner’s course - which is amazing, and I’ve been so happy with the feedback that is coming in.
I’m also aware that many others who responded to my posts back at the start of November have not taken it any further. Of course that’s absolutely fine, and the very last thing I would want to do is pester anyone who isn’t ready yet for whatever reason.
But when I started this group I was hoping that it would address some of the barriers that are preventing people who want to start yoga from starting yoga. Obviously I would love that to be with me, but I would also be delighted if you started yoga with another teacher too.
So if you’ve got a spare minute (which I know is rare at this time of year) could you comment and tell me what is stopping you, and how that barrier could be overcome.

Here is a treat for you. This is 7 minutes of mega-gentle yoga, ideal if you just need to get the circulation going and ease off a bit of tension.
It’s actually the closing sequence from one of my retreat classes, and the full class will soon be available. But for now, just ease your body through these gentle stretches and twists - then let me know how you feel.

This is my friend Sally Harker
The photo on the left was taken in 2020; the photo on the right was taken very recently. But this is categorically a weight loss story (mainly because Sally hasn’t actually lost that much weight, and still eats cake!). The reason I have posted this photo is because it illustrates a principle that I believe is massively important.
Prioritise your health - and watch everything else change.
When that first photo was taken Sally was just recovering from some serious health blows, and had decided to start doing yoga - Chi Living yoga in fact. Now she does yoga almost every day, and her life has changed in more ways than you can imagine. To people who are procrastinating about starting yoga, or who are too nervous or think that they don’t have the time, Sally says,
“Stop thinking about it, and go and change your life.”
But this isn’t just a post about Sally, although I could go on and on about her amazing and inspiring story!. It’s a post about the possibilities that open up when you start to put your health at the top of your list of priorities - not just your physical health, but your mental health, your intellectual health, your social health, and your spiritual health (whatever that last term means to you).
In a few weeks, millions of us will make New Year’s resolutions. Most of them won’t see the end of January. What I am suggesting is that we all have the opportunity to do something different today, not on January 1st; that we all have the opportunity to “stop thinking about it, and go and change your life”.
Obviously, I am going to say that a brilliant way to do that is to embark on a yoga and mindfulness journey with Chi Living. It has transformed my life, and the lives of many others who have started doing Chi Living yoga classes. But however you chose to do it, stop talking about it, and go and change your life. I would be over the moon if you tell me how you get on.
