Myopia in the spotlight 👀

Last week in the news, it was reported that Myopia or short-sightedness, is becoming a global health concern with one in three children struggling to see distant objects clearly 👓

The recently published their global study, revealing that cases of myopia are escalating at an alarming rate, and it has been projected to affect millions more children worldwide, by the year 2050 🌍

Genetics certainly influences the development of myopia, however the dramatic rise of Myopia in children has been attributed to lifestyle changes, such as increased screen time from an earlier age and reduced outdoor activity. Long periods of near-vision tasks without breaks or outdoor time accelerate the progression of myopia 💻

The research suggests that time spent outdoors in natural light plays a crucial role in eye health, as it encourages distance vision and may help regulate eye growth ☀️

Action is needed, but how can we combat this increase and what preventative measures can be put in place?
Reducing screentime, encouraging more outdoor play, additional breaks to balance close work tasks, and very importantly, educating families and the schools on the importance of eye health and regular eye examinations for children. These are just some of the interventions to reduce and prevent the growing myopia epidemic 👓
