CK Therapy : New service !

One-off Support sessions
Guidance, coping strategies, and signposting for children, young people, and their parents or carers.

Read through to learn about our new service with our wonderful compassionate partner Carolyn.

“Sometimes a child or young person is struggling, but ongoing therapy isn’t the right step — or the right time. Maybe the family is waiting for assessment, feeling unsure about what to do next, or simply need to talk things through with someone who understands.
This session offers a calm, supportive space to explore what’s going on for the child, with a focus on emotional insight, understanding, and practical strategies.
It’s not therapy, but it is a therapeutic consultation grounded in my experience as a psychotherapist.”

A warm hello and a note of thanks

Hello,
I thought it was time to reintroduce the face behind CK Therapy — the compassionate and kind therapy service. I’m Catherine Kniveton, founder and therapist. I am both an Art psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner.
I started CK Therapy online in 2020, and by 2021 we opened our first face-to-face clinic in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Since then, we’ve moved three times, grown, and evolved into a practice I’m truly proud of. I wanted to create a space that feels like a therapy space id want to go to. I valued a safe warm , welcoming, clean and less clinical space than i’d been to before. I wanted to repliocate what id learnt on my masters ; people feel valued by the materials and space that you provide. And a space that allows everyone to play! As Adults we can often forget to play.

Today, I’m lucky to have the privillage of working from my own base CK Therapy on North street in Ashby de la zouch. A space I worked alongside my amazing husband to create what feels like to me warm and inviting therapy rooms. A space where since Ive had the privillage to work alongside a wonderful team of skilled compassionate and incredible therapists who i learn so much from working alongside.

Each therapists brings somethings unique and valuable and I feel honoured that they have chosen to work in partnerhsip with CKTherapy and myself. They’re an incredible team who offer great support to thier clients and to me personally. Im greatful to the team for thier peer supervision , kindness, warmth and laughter I couldn’t do this job without them now.

Thank you to everyone who’s trusted me and allowed me the privillage to walk alongside them in therapy—to witness their growth, self-worth, and healing. And to the therapists and anyone whose been involved in this journey.

I’m Excited to see whats next.

With Kindness and Compassion
Catherine

CK Therapy : thoughtful reflections

Don’t forget to add yourself to your own to do list.

We’re often so focused on productivity, appointments, and responsibilities that we forget to check in with the person carrying it all - you.

You are not a task to complete - but you do need care, too. Let your wellbeing be part of the plan, not just the background.

Explore what it would feel like to check in have I forgotten myself today?
Example prompts might include ;
Have I eaten?
• Have I spoken kindly to myself today?
• Have I rested??
• Have I done something that brings me joy?

Stepping Away Is Not Giving Up

As therapists we often see how hard it can be to step away from something that’s no longer working. Often people carry beliefs that walking away means failure. But what if letting go is actually an act of strength, clarity, and self-compassion?

Sometimes, stepping away is the most aligned and protective thing we can do. It can be the space we need to heal or grow.

We love the quote by Elizabeth Day:
“Failure is the condiment to my success.”
Because it’s true — our perceived failures often season our learning with richness and often lead to our own version of what is success.

Clinically, we know that insight often comes not from pushing harder, but from pausing, reflecting, and choosing differently. Growth doesn’t always look like persistence — sometimes it looks like rest, redirection, or release.

Prompts for self reflection;
• What are the things you’d like to step away from?
• What would you like to step toward instead?
• What are you missing that you could gain by starting something new - or by leaving something that no longer serves you?
• If you knew stepping away wasn’t failure, what would you give yourself permission to change?

If you’re in a season of stepping away, you’re not broken. You’re listening.

If you’re finding it difficult to step away from something — or feel weighed down by shame that’s keeping you stuck - we’re here to help.
Get in touch to explore this gently and personally through therapy.

Another wonderful EMDR review with our lead therapist Catherine

Google verified review ;

Catherine is amazing at what she does. The past 8 months we’ve used a mix of EMDR and talking therapy. Her professional, kind, gentle and empathetic approach created a space to feel safe and encourage me to manage one of the most difficult things l’ve had to go through physically and emotionally. The whole experience been incredibly valuable for my wellbeing and my family’s and thank my lucky stars I came across her.

Ck therapy REFLECTIONS ON VALIDATION:
Validation doesn’t mean agreement.
It means empathy.
When someone feels seen, they’re more likely to move forward - not shut down.

Validation is one of the most powerful tools in connection and healing. It tells someone:
“Your feelings make sense.”
Not: “You need to feel something different.”

Examples;
Instead of...
“Don’t cry, it’ll be okay.”
Try...
“I can see how much this is hurting. I’m here with you.”
Instead of...
“At least it’s not as bad as it could be.”
Try...
“That sounds really hard. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed.”
Instead of...
“You’re being too sensitive.”
Try...
“Your reaction makes sense given what you’ve been through.”
Try...
Instead of...
“This cannot be hard, you are so smart”
“T hear this is hard for you”

THOUGHTFUL REFLECTIONS

‘A trigger can be an invitation to meet part of you that still needs healing’

Triggers can feel sharp, sudden, and overwhelming like something outside of us has hijacked our inner world. But they also carry information. They show us where old wounds still live beneath the surface. Not because we’re broken - but because something inside us is asking for attention, compassion, and care.
In therapy, we don’t rush to silence triggers. Instead, we gently explore:
What’s being activated?
Where does this reaction come from?
What part of you didn’t get what it needed back then?
Healing isn’t about avoiding the trigger - it’s about learning to meet yourself within it, with more understanding, tools, and safety than you had before.
If a trigger shows up, it’s not proof of failure. It’s proof you’re human - and that there’s a part of your story that still matters.

Do you ever notice what your triggers are trying to say?
Therapy can help you listen without judgment.

CKTherapy - understanding EMDR

Let’s talk about EMDR — and the train analogy.

“You can’t go back and change the beginning,
but you can start where you are and change the ending.”
– C.S. Lewis

If you’ve experienced trauma or carry emotional wounds from the past, you may know what it’s like to feel stuck — reliving moments you wish you could leave behind.
EMDR therapy doesn’t erase what happened… but it helps you step out of its shadow.

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a gentle, structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain heal from overwhelming experiences — like trauma, grief, or persistent anxiety.

When something painful happens, the brain can sometimes get “stuck” in that moment.
Instead of processing the memory and moving forward, it lingers — showing up as flashbacks, panic, negative beliefs (“I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough”), or even physical symptoms.

EMDR helps the brain do what it was meant to do: process, heal, and move forward.

The train metaphor:
Imagine you’re sitting in a train car. You’re grounded. Safe. Present.
Outside the window, scenes from the past begin to pass by — thoughts, emotions, sensations. But you’re not in them. You’re observing them.
And if anything feels overwhelming, you can always bring your focus back to the train — to the safety of this moment.

🛤️ Healing with EMDR happens one step at a time. At your own pace. With support.
It’s a process of reclaiming your life, memory by memory, story by story — so the past no longer controls the present.

Common concerns EMDR supports:
– PTSD & trauma (including childhood trauma)
– Anxiety, phobias, panic attacks
– Grief and loss
– Disturbing memories
– Negative self-beliefs (“I’m not good enough”)
– Some chronic pain & performance blocks

What EMDR isn’t:
– It’s not hypnosis.
– You’re fully aware and in control.
– You don’t need to share every detail of what happened.

And it’s okay to start exactly where you are.

If you’d like to get in touch to learn about EMDR with one of our qualified and experienced practitioners get in touch via the link in our bio.

Summer therapy reflections

Lets be Curious about Jealousy...
As summer begins to bloom, something else often surfaces in therapy: jealousy. It’s a word many shy away from - even fear.

“I shouldn’t be feeling this,” we tell ourselves.
“I must be a bad person for thinking that.”
Maybe you scroll past a friend’s beach trip and feel a pang. Or hear about someone’s weekend plans and suddenly feel a little emptier inside. Jealousy kicks in - and shame often follows close behind.

But what if, instead of judging it, we listened to it?
Jealousy isn’t a flaw — it’s a signal. A quiet voice asking,
“What am I longing for?”

Closer friendships?
# More adventure or connection?
Rest, joy, or just more of you?

In therapy, we get curious. We explore how you might begin to gently meet those needs - without guilt.
• What might your jealousy be trying to tell you?

Jealousy isn’t a flaw - it’s a signal. A quiet voice asking, “What am I longing for?”
What is your Jealousy signalling to you?

CK Therapy Compassionate partner reviews
Read a recent review about our wonderful team member Carolyn and how she’s supported a teenager recently.

“Carolyn has been a godsend for my teenage daughter, and to us as a family. She has gone above and beyond to help, and genuinely cares about her well being.
My daughter can read if someone likes her or not, and feels comfortable enough with Carolyn to open up about things which she hasn’t shared with others.
Within the first session Carolyn identified possible neurodiversity needs that we hadn’t, and since we have now got a formal diagnosis and hopefully are on the pathway to the correct support.
Carolyn continues to support our daughter to help her navigate her emotions and develop strategies to build her self esteem and feelings of self worth.
Carolyn has written to both our GP and school to outline her areas of need and to suggest ways in which she could be supported in a school environment.
We are truly grateful for all the help she has, and continues to provide. Carolyn has remained professional and warm throughout, and I have never felt uncomfortable making contact or seeking advice.
I wholeheartedly recommend Carolyn (I have signposted her to others I know) and I only wish we had gone to see her earlier.”

CKTherapy thoughtful reflections ;

“Who taught you rest was wrong?”

We often see clients who feel deeply uncomfortable with rest — not because they don’t need it, but because guilt shows up the moment they slow down.

Sometimes, that guilt traces back to early messages: being praised for being “low maintenance,” not needing much, always being the helper. Over time, those messages can make it hard to ask for support or to feel worthy of rest.

But your nervous system has limits. When rest is postponed for too long, your body eventually takes the lead — through burnout, fatigue, or shutdown.

If you notice guilt creeping in when you try to rest, it’s worth asking: Where did I learn that resting is wrong? And who benefits when I ignore my own?
