How could I not post!!

Happy international day of the midwife 🫶

They say midwifery is a calling and I really believe this. In 2007 my calling happened … we named him Oliver and I’ve never looked back

I have the most incredible job!!. Every day my heart smiles with pride, for the women and families I support during these special times. The fact people then request me as their midwife is just out of this world!!

I have the pleasure of working everyday with such amazing midwives, the care and compassion they give is inspirational so join me and let’s celebrate all the midwives around 🩵

Oliver changed my life, he made me a mum and he shaped my future. I am forever grateful for that day and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Wow 2022 - What a year!
As this year is coming to an end, I’ve been reflecting on all the amazing things I’ve done, achieved and seen

2022 was definitely we hypnobirth’s busiest year and I’m so grateful for every family I’ve worked with and supported during this year. I’m hoping 2023 will bring more clients, more positive births and more people talking about hypnobirthing

In my NHS role, I gained confidence. I gave crp, i pushed myself in unfamiliar situations. I have been a hand to hold and a shoulder to cry on. I’ve learnt new skills and expanded old knowledge. I did a hundred things I never knew I could do and gosh I’m grateful for the NHS being there to support me in my role.

Remember to celebrate your achievements. It’s all too easy to reflect on the things we did badly (cause let’s be honest we are all human and we make mistakes - no one is perfect) but it’s important to pat yourself on the back for the things you do well

2023 let’s be having you - here’s to bigger adventures, higher achievements and more family time

Happy new year we hypnobirth family

Being a birth partner is a tough role, and can be a lot of pressure

As a midwife I see all types of birth partners in the birthing room, and if I could give you one bit of advice or tip it would be, be yourself

Be the funny, speak up and genuinely amazing person you are. In moments of need you will be the first person they look too, the first person they ask what do you think?

Being prepared is crucial, and we all know knowledge is power but put your own spin on the prep and make it what you both need. Build your own toolbox of things to pull upon in labour and stand proud in the birth room

In all of our classes we help you feel confident for birth as well, as I know for experience you are so important and this is your birth too

No gas and air 😱

With the talk of East Kent unable to supply the use of gas and air due to ventilation concerns I thought I would get some ideas down that may help:

🏡 Consider your birth environment. Could you consider and arrange/book for a home birth, could you transfer to a nearby trust?

😮‍💨 Learn some breathing techniques: (these can be so important and the main reason why gas and air is effective because you breath so much more deeply)

🛁 Plan your comfort measures - hot water bottle, tens machine, birthing ball, move around, use the pool, a bath or shower, hypnobirthing tools, acupressure points, breathing techniques, massage techniques - the list is endless

💉 Learn about other medical alternatives- pethidine and epidurals (consider using the B.R.A.I.N acronym, how they might help or feel and how they might impact how your baby is born

Remember that your ability to cope in labour does not lie in you using gas & air. It lies in YOU!!

Book a power hour with me via zoom for just £35 and discuss your choices and options to help you gain control for your birth

My C Section recovery tips from a midwife

With C Section rates varying between different NHS trusts, it’s obvious to see from the published stats that C Section births are increasing.

I want to give you my top tips to help your recovery period after your birth:

💊 Pain Medication - take regular pain relief especially in the first week post birth (even if you feel like you don’t need it). Staying on top of your pain management is a key role in recovery

🛏️ Rest: Rest is an important part of recovery to help aid healing. Try and nap during the day, sit in front of the tv with a cuppa and use support pillows to aid comfort

* Getting in and out of bed can be difficult or uncomfortable while you’re recovering from your c-section. Try - rolling on to your side, dropping both legs over the side of the bed, pushing yourself up sideways into a sitting position.
Try to stand up as straight as you can. You can do the opposite to get back into bed

🛁 Keep your wound clean and dry: most dressing are removed on day 5. Let air get to your wound, and ensure it’s clean and dry. Avoid using a hair drier to dry your wound after a shower - pat dry with a clean towel

🫧 Wind pain: wind pain can be very common post C Section birth. Try and move frequently. Chew chewing gum 3 times a day for 30mins to reduce the risk of constipation and increase bowel function

🚶‍♀️ Moving and mobilising: super important post birth to help prevent blood clots. Taking small walks when you feel ready can help improve your mental health and overall emotional well-being

🫱 Support you scar when moving, coughing and laughing: when moving apply a small amount of support pressure along your scar

How to advocate in your antenatal / midwife appointments

Being informed and aware of your choices is critical in todays maternity system. Navigating your way around can be hard especially when a lot of recommendations are based on poor research.

Pregnancy is NOT a tick box exercise, it is not a one size fits all approach. Midwives, obstetricians and care providers are bound by policies, guidelines and politics of a broken system. However knowing how to ask questions and being aware of ALL the choices that are available to you will ensure you get off the maternity conveyor belt and into personalised care pathways

If your reading this and thinking what do I do? Don’t worry, there is time to get support to navigate the system and become informed. In our we hypnobirth course and antenatal classes we support you through this journey. We will discuss your birth rights and give you the knowledge and confidence to have the birth you want

If I’m hypnobirthing do I need to be quiet in labour?

Keeping our jaws soft during labour helps support opening up your pelvis. Combine this with a low groan (birth moo as we like to call it) will help release any tension stored in the birth canal and speed up labour.

Let your birth roar, sing or moo - what ever you fancy doing, be the powerful human you need to be

*Just a side note - some people are very quiet in labour and that’s ok too*

If you aren’t one to make a birth noise but want to encourage a relaxed jaw. You could try:
💨 Blowing raspberries
🦶Wiggle your toes
🍹Drink through a bendy straw

Don’t be afraid to step into your birth. You do you!!
