I started my journey into complementary therapies when I decided to train in reflexology after a period of ill-health, way back in 1995. A little later I came across Jin Shin Jyutsu finger holds in a Hand Reflexology text book and very soon after added that to my business. Around the same time I had begun practising yoga on a daily basis and came across Dru yoga, and started my 4 year training in North Wales in 2001 (although it ended up taking a little longer than 4 years as my son was born shortly before I would have completed my training so I took a bit of time out). Luckily I had already passed my initial teaching assessment so began teaching with a huge bump - and also did my Birthlight perinatal and postnatal training during my pregnancy too.
In the early years I didn’t have a business name as such, and it was only when I finally caught up with technology and launched my website that Sunfish Yoga and Therapy was born. I’m often asked ‘Why Sunfish?’ and it just came to me on a sleepless night shortly before my website was due to go live without a name! I was playing around in my mind with names of yoga practices and how they might work for the name - and Sunfish was born - a combination of Sun salutations (Surya namaskara being the Sanskrit name) and the gorgeous fish pose, both of which are enduring favourites of mine.
My first logo was also born in that same evening, as I sat and drew my ideas by hand - it wasn’t very professional, but it did the job for a year or two before I had my new logo professionally designed.
In 2017, after many years working as a mobile therapist and teaching my classes in church and village halls, and more than 20 years in my business, I opened my own studio in Wye. The Sunfish Yoga and Therapy studio in Church Street Wye is a dream come true....a calm and welcoming space in which to teach my classes and offer relaxing wellbeing treatments for my clients. I personally teach Dru yoga classes, suitable for all, prenatal and postnatal yoga classes for mums to be and new mums with their babies, and offer reflexology (feet, hands, ears, and facial options available) and Jin Shin Jyutsu in my tranquil treatment room. As the studio develops and the team has grown, we continue to offer more services - and in 2018 we have added Baby Massage Classes and Nutrition Consultations.
