Never take inflatables to the beach.

Strong currents and offshore winds can easily sweep them out to sea.

Instead, leave them at home and enjoy them safely in the pool.

If you see an inflatable that's been blown out to sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

There have been several water safety incidents over the last few days, both locally and further afield. 🌊

With more sunshine forecast over the coming days and weeks, we want to remind you of the importance of staying safe in the sun, particularly around water.

We know it's tempting when it's warm but under the surface the water can be icy cold with strong undercurrents that could pull even a strong swimmer under the water.

If you do go in and begin struggling, try and lean back and float. Use your arms and legs to help you get into this position, and try and stay calm.

👉 If you come across someone else in difficulty
👉 Don't put yourself at risk by entering the water yourself

Immediately dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard who can help co-ordinate an appropriate response.

You can find useful advice here 👉 https://rnli.org/safety

Please take care and look out for one another

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

When we need to get to an emergency in a hurry it’s imperative that we not only know how to get there quickly but that we start formulating our rescue plans on the journey. This means we need to know not only our own patch but also that of our flanking teams as we’re often called out together.

Recent training at St Mary’s Lighthouse took a turn when Blyth CRT were paged to a job so we used the time to familiarise ourselves with the island, and it was a beautiful evening for it!

HM Coastguard has responded to a high volume of missing children incidents today. Follow our advice below to help keep children safe at the coast.

Reduce the risks:

• Stay close and supervise children at all times
• Agree a meeting point if you get separated.
• Take a photo of your children to show coastguards in an emergency.
• Write your contact details on your child's safety wristband so that you can be reunited easily.

HM Coastguard responds to emergencies by the coast that come in all shapes and sizes. Calls might be to mud, cliffs or water. Or someone might be missing, threatened by floods, or trapped under sand on the beach.

Around 300 Coastguard Rescue Teams (CRTs) along the UK shoreline are on 24-hour readiness to deal with the variety of incidents that come their way.

As well as fundamental skills, such as searching, casualty care and water rescue, the volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) that make up the CRTs are specially trained and equipped for their particular local conditions.

These capabilities are joined by HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopters, lifeboats, and fellow emergency services, among others.

How they respond will depend on the situation, the environment, and how many people are involved. The safety of both the public and CROs is always the priority.

Scroll through to discover how these volunteer lifesavers are trained to be ready for anything.
