Our Story
Health Visitors are qualified and registered nurses and/or midwives who have undertaken specialist training in public health, child health, health promotion and education in order to work with parents and carers to give their child the very best start in life.
We are a universal service, which means all families with children under 5 have access to a health visitor.
We aim to promote the physical health and emotional well-being of children and their families and to safeguard and promote children’s welfare.
We can offer you support & information about a number of areas including:
Infant feeding, specialist knowledge of breastfeeding and weaning, child growth & development including developmental assessments & screening tests, your health needs including diet & exercise, giving up smoking, bereavement, postnatal depression and domestic violence. We can refer you to specialist support services, including those for complex needs, emotional wellbeing, and for substance misuse.
All of our teams have Health Care Assistants and Community Nursery Nurses who support us in our role. Our Health Care Assistants are based in the clinics and offer us admin support. They also support is in baby clinics, on health promotion events and on some home visits.
Our Community Nursery Nurses can offer advice and support on breastfeeding, baby massage, weaning, play & stimulation, toileting, fussy eating, sleep routines, behaviour, listening support, safety and 2 & 3 year developmental assessments.
We work alongside midwives & GPs, social workers, nurseries & schools, speech and language therapists, children’s centre staff, hospital & mental health services.
