On this International Day of the Midwife, thank you to the incredible midwives who are there for families in our community every day of the year.

Today we signed The Royal College of Midwives' Caring for You Charter, committing to support midwives' health, safety and wellbeing so they are able to provide high quality and safe maternity care to women and their families.

Hand them in, don’t put them in the bin! ♻️

Use an inhaler for a condition like asthma or COPD? You can now safely dispose of old inhalers at Tameside Hospital in a more environmentally friendly way.

Some types of inhalers contain greenhouse gases as propellants to help deliver the medicine to your lungs. While these gases are not harmful to people who use inhalers, they do contribute to climate change by trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere.

Even after the inhaler is empty of medicine, these environmentally damaging gases remain and so inhalers should never be discarded as part of general household rubbish.

Instead, the best and safest way to get rid of an expired or unused inhaler is to return it to a pharmacy or hospital where it can be disposed of properly.

Inhalers collected in the new bins at Tameside Hospital will be sent for incineration, which degrades the leftover greenhouse gases to make them less harmful to the environment.

The inhaler bins were kindly donated by Veolia, a UK-based company who provide a range of waste, water and energy management services designed to protect the environment.

One year on from its launch, the emergency department blood testing programme at Tameside Hospital has been helping more people access life-saving treatment and support for and B and C infections.

New figures revealed that 75 people received a new diagnosis of HIV or viral hepatitis through the programme between March 2025 to March 2026.

On top of this, the programme has identified an additional 15 people who had previously been diagnosed with HIV or hepatitis, but had lost touch with health services, giving them a second chance to access treatment and support.

Early diagnosis means people can start treatment before health complications arise, allowing them to live long, healthy lives and prevent onward transmission.

🤰There’s a lot to consider when you find out you’re pregnant. From understanding the different tests and vaccinations available, to knowing what to eat and what not to eat, it’s important to have the information you need to keep you and your baby safe and well.

The best way to do that is to book in to see a midwife before 10 weeks of pregnancy. Midwives can talk you through everything you need to know, answer any questions and offer support.
