Almost three years ago, Summer Clarke was rushed to Tameside Hospital after a life-threatening stroke. Now, she has returned to the hospital as a volunteer, hoping to inspire other patients by sharing her story.

“I spent six months in hospital and another five in rehab, so I have really good insight into what it’s like," Summer says, “I wanted to volunteer on the stroke ward and help patients struggling with the same issues, like problems with cognition, movement or vision.

“I had to learn everything again, and I still have some cognition problems, but I’m making progress every day."

Learn more about Summer's journey and how you too can get involved as a volunteer via the link in the comments.

With the help of his beloved dog, a local Hadfield man living with stage 4 has donated £1,000 to the Macmillan Advanced Cancer Nurses at Tameside Hospital through Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity.

After being diagnosed just over a year ago with advanced prostate cancer, Neil was determined to prevent others from facing a late diagnosis. Inspired by Chris Hoy's 'Tour de 4' campaign, Neil launched 'Walk-4-4' walks to raise both awareness and funds for charities which support people living with cancer.

Rafferty the dog has supported Neil on many of his awareness walks, becoming something of a local celebrity. Rafferty, dressed up as Santa, also featured on festive biscuits which Neil sold over the Christmas period with the help of local businesses.

Neil wanted his first £1,000 raised to go directly to the nurses who support people with cancer every single day. He said, “The advanced cancer nurses from the Tameside Macmillan Unit have been by my side every step of the way. This £1,000 donation is my way of saying thank you, but it’s just the beginning.”

Local businesses and volunteers have come together to make support bags for patients attending their first chemotherapy appointments.

Tibard Uniforms, based on Globe Lane Industrial Estate in Dukinfield, lovingly created 400 bespoke fabric support bags for patients, made using rolls of unused and discontinued fabric. Staff at Tibard volunteered their own time to design and sew the bags, adding special details such as love heart stitching to make each one feel personal.

The bags are being filled with essential comfort items thanks to months of fundraising by Mossley Cancer Committee. The group has worked hard to provide toiletries, hand creams and lip balms alongside other small but important items that can make a difficult day feel a little easier.

Adding a smile to each bag, New Mills-based company Swizzels has generously donated hundreds of packets of Love Hearts and Drumstick Squashies, giving each patient a sweet treat to help brighten up a tough time.

The family of a much-loved 34-year-old man from Tameside are sharing his story in the hope of raising awareness of organ donation and supporting other patients and families at Tameside Hospital.

Following his death in September 2025, Mark Thorley’s kidneys, pancreas, heart and lungs were all donated, gifting new life to five strangers in desperate need of a transplant.

Mark was admitted to the Critical Care Unit at Tameside Hospital after suffering multiple cardiac arrests caused by a seizure.

"One thing I will never forget is that even though Mark was on a ventilator and unresponsive, staff spoke to him whenever they did tests or took blood," said Dawn, Mark's mum.

"As a mother, that meant the absolute world."

Despite every effort, Mark sadly did not regain consciousness and passed away on 2 September 2025. He was a registered organ donor, and his family were supported by the organ donation team to honour his wishes. By donating his organs, Mark has given five other people a second chance at life.

Now, Mark's family, friends and colleagues have come together to raise funds for Tameside and Glossop NHS Charity and the Critical Care Unit, including support towards a proposed memorial garden for patients and families. You can donate via the link in the comments.
