Water Safety 🏊♂️🏊♀️
As we head towards the summer holidays, these are such important lessons.
⚠️ 5 Water Safety Tips for Canals, Quays and Open Water 🛟
✋ Don’t Swim in Canals or Quarries 🛑
🌊 These places might look calm and tempting, but they often hide strong currents, machinery, or debris that can be dangerous.
🥶 Beware of Cold Water Shock
Even on warm days, the water in canals, rivers and quays can be icy cold. Jumping or falling in can cause your body to go into shock – making it hard to breathe or swim.
⚠️ Edges Can Be Slippery and Steep
Stay well back from the edge. Banks and towpaths can be uneven or slippery – especially after rain.
No Inflatables
🛟 Inflatables are easily swept away or pulled under in open water. They’re not safe for use in canals, rivers or quays.
☎️ If You See Someone in Trouble, Call 999
Don’t go in after them. Call 999 and ask for the fire and rescue service. Use a throwline or anything that floats if it’s safe to do so.
Let’s keep everyone safe near open water this summer. Share the message! 🌊🚫
