Keep it warm!

A smoothie is a great way to get some extra nutrients, but they are cold. During the winter you should be keeping cold foods to a minimum and that includes your smoothie. Especially if you are using frozen fruit.

I know that might sound a bit odd but cold foods put your digestion under stress or even shock. That’s why I never have ice drinks.

I suggest just adding a drop of warm water to your smoothie to take the cold edge off.

Is this a healthy alternative chocolate bar?

It must be. It is gluten-free, dairy-free, palm-oil free, vegan, fully plant based. Look again at the ingredients.

The first ingredient is sugar. The second is glucose syrup (the worst kind of sugar) and then we have more sugar in the form of golden syrup and brown sugar. The rest is then made up of artificial flavourings. Thankfully there is some sea salt and pea protein.

There is absolutely nothing healthy about this bar.
I understand that not everyone wants to eat dairy and will try to eat plant-based. If that is the case you would be better to eat dates, nuts, good alternative vegan chocolate. Not this junk, which can lead to long term poor health.

Need to increase your protein and fibre intake? - This will help to support weight loss, reduce sugar cravings and support hormone imbalances.

Lentils are great for doing both. This dish is easy to make and versatile.

Make it as a base for other dishes such as a veggie Sheppard’s pie or use it as a pasta sauce. Add other vegetables such as carrots, courgette or spinach.
Batch cook and freeze.

1 onion chopped
2-3 garlic chopped
2 tbsp tomato puree
1 tsp of dried mixed herbs
2 tbsp red wine or balsamic vinegar (optional)
1 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional – add if a vegetarian/vegan)
350/400ml passata
1 cup dried red lentils
1 1/2 cup vegetable broth
Salt & pepper

Method:
Cook onion, garlic until soft
Add tomato puree, passata, wine, herbs and seasoning. Cook for a few minutes.
Add lentils and broth
Bring to the boil, then simmer until the lentils are soft.
Stir constantly.
More liquid may have to be added throughout.

Watercress, one of the healthiest vegetables

I bet most of you think of Watercress as a garnish.….think again! Studies now show it is one of the healthiest vegetables, scoring 100% in research tests.

It has a peppery and almost bitter taste, similar to rocket leaves (also highly nutritious)

Watercress is incredibly nutrient-dense, with a wide variety of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants in every bite.

100grams give 11 calories / 2g protein / 1g fibre / 1g carbohydrate

Although the standout is for the micronutrients (amounts approx.)

- Vitamin C 43mg (100% daily value) – antioxidant rich. Boosts immunity protection.

- Vitamin A 160mg (23% DV) – Supports eye, skin and immune health.

- Vitamin K 250mg (384% DV) - helps with blood clotting and bone health (not suitable if taking blood thinner medication)

It is a bitter food and is great for keeping a sweet tooth under control. Add a handful to a meal, even as a garnish, every little helps.

Other studies show that it can lower ‘bad’ cholesterol levels, therefore protecting the heart, which is attributed to its powerful antioxidant content. As for all green leafy veg.

It is also really easy to grow at home on the window seal….just like mustard & cress as you did as a kid.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT POLENTA

*Made from cornmeal.
*Can be eaten savoury or sweet.
*Naturally gluten-free and is suitable for those with Coeliac Disease or a Gluten Intolerance.
*It’s low in fat and calories.
*A good source of fibre to support gut health.
*A good source of protein.
*Not high in vitamins and minerals but does contain vitamins A&C, zinc and magnesium.

This recipe is made with polenta and almond flour. Both gluten-free.
