For as long as I can remember, yoga has been my foundation. As a teacher, I’ve always loved the way it connects breath with movement, strength with stillness. But over time, I began to realize that while yoga nurtured my flexibility and balance, my body was craving something more. I needed to feel strong in a different way.
That’s when I started strength training.
I started lifting weights in October—nothing extreme, just a steady, intentional practice. I expected it to help with endurance and maybe a bit of muscle tone, but I never anticipated the profound impact it would have on my overall well-being.
Last winter was brutal. As a barista, I was constantly exposed to people, their colds, their sniffles, their germs. It felt like I was always on the verge of being sick, one illness bleeding into the next. I was exhausted, drained, and my body struggled to keep up.
But this winter? Something shifted. I feel resilient, grounded—strong in a way I’ve never felt before. I haven’t been sick since Christmas, and I truly believe strength training has played a huge role in that. My immune system seems to have built a new kind of armor.
And it’s not just my health that has improved—my yoga practice has transformed, too. Downward-facing dog feels more stable, my push-ups are no longer a struggle, and I can flow through sequences with my students without gasping for breath. I don’t just guide the class; I move with them, fully present, fully capable.
Strength training didn’t replace yoga—it deepened it. It gave me confidence in my body in a way I didn’t know I was missing. And now, I move not just with grace, but with power.
