Appreciation Post for Richard Gladders, who to most people is simply known as Budgie.

One night in Atherstone, he asked Matthew and Nigel if he could help out on the occasional funeral here and there… and 45 hours a week and three years later, he’s practically become full-time, helping during the day and out of hours, seven days a week.

He’s the first one in most mornings, usually a good hour before we even start, and he takes massive pride in making sure the cars leave the unit absolutely gleaming.

He’s got to be one of the most popular people we’ve ever come across. Wherever we go, Budgie seems to know somebody — whether it’s from his pit days, football, or socialising. It’s rare we attend a funeral where he doesn’t recognise a familiar face.

He’s a fantastic chap with a heart of gold, who would help anybody without hesitation, and he truly goes above and beyond the call of duty to support people during the most difficult times of their lives.

Thank you, Budgie, for everything you do.

Every Goodbye Tells a Story.

Behind every farewell is a life full of moments, memories, and love.

This video captures a quiet part of the journey — the careful preparation, the respect, and the dedication that goes into ensuring every goodbye is handled with the utmost care.

At M.G. Evans & Sons, we understand that saying goodbye is never easy… but it deserves to be meaningful, personal, and dignified.

Because every goodbye tells a story — and every story deserves to be honoured.

We are proud to see Carly on BBC News today discussing how families, who are unable to meet the cost of traditional funerals, are choosing different and more affordable options. It’s exactly where we can make a difference offering families dignified, tailored alternatives that honour their loved ones without financial strain.

A Peaceful Space for Private Goodbyes at M G Evans & Sons, Nuneaton

As funeral directors we understand that every family’s needs are different. For those who choose an unattended direct cremation, saying a private farewell can still be an incredibly meaningful part of the journey.

Within our beautiful Meldor Suite we offer a calm, comfortable space where your friends and family can come together in your own time and in your own company. There is no rush, no pressure, and no expectations just the chance to say goodbye in your own deeply personal and peaceful way.

This unique room can also be used for after-service refreshments, for families who prefer not to return to a pub, club or larger venue. We have a choice of buffet styles and prices to suit everyone. The space allows you to join together, reflect, share memories and celebrate a life in a private setting that feels thoughtful and respectful.

Every family deserves choice and space to grieve in a way that feels right for them and we are proud to offer just that here at M G Evans & Sons.

If you would like more information or to arrange a visit, please feel free to get in touch. We’re here for you and your family every step of the way.

Appreciation post for Harry Alcock

Today we want to take a moment to recognise a very special member of staff Mr Harry Alcock, who has been a valued member of our team for an incredible 16 years and is now 80 years old.

From day one, Harry has gone above and beyond for every funeral he has been involved in. Whether it’s stepping in to cover out-of-hours work or lending a hand wherever needed. He has always been someone we can rely upon without fail and whenever we attend a funeral there always seems to be someone Harry knows, which is a testament to both his character and the connections he has built over a lifetime.

We are very blessed to have had Harry with us all these years, and we cannot thank him enough for his dedication and commitment.

And in true Harry style, he has said that if he is able, he would like to retire at 100 years old!

Thank you, Harry for everything you have done and continue to do. We appreciate you more than words can say.

Yesterday marked 17 years since Melvyn Gwyn Evans passed away, and not a day goes by where what he started isn’t remembered by any of us.

In 1969, he took a huge gamble. He left Wales and brought his young family with him, risking everything to try and build a better life for them all by starting our family business from the ground up.

He was a man who took no days off, doing absolutely everything he could to make it work, no matter the hours or the pressure. His determination laid the foundations for everything our family has continued to build today.

He will always be remembered, and his legacy lives on. ❤️

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who came to our Christmas Memorial Service. Seeing so many people come together meant more to us than words can say, and it truly made the evening what it was.

A special thank you to St Mary’s Church, Atherstone, and to John Stock, Glynis Gayton, Father Phillip Wells, Liz Bickley, Kerry Jones, and everyone who helped behind the scenes. Your kindness and support helped create such a warm and meaningful night.

The turnout was incredible, and we really hope the service brought you some comfort and a moment of peace during what can be a very difficult time of year. Thank you for being there, for remembering, and for sharing the evening with us, it meant so much to us.

If anyone is feeling alone over Christmas and needs someone to talk to, please know that you are not on your own. We are always here to help and the door is always open for anybody. ❤️

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our friend and former colleague Danny Ward. Danny was a valued part of our family funeral directors for many years, always going above and beyond for the families we serve and for all of us who worked alongside him. Even though he moved on from the business six years ago, he remained a fond and respected part of our story.
He will be missed by every one of us. God bless you Danny ❤️

Danny Ward
(1966–2025)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Danny on 1st December 2025 at Merevale House, aged 58, after a courageous battle with dementia.

Danny was a cherished brother to Christine, Peter, Barry, David, Robert, Des, Jane, and the late Ray and Graham. He was a dearly loved uncle, a devoted friend, and a kind soul who touched the lives of many.

A funeral service to celebrate Danny’s life will be held on Friday 2nd January 2026 at 12.30pm at St Michael & All Angels Church, Wood End, followed by a cremation at Sutton Coldfield Crematorium.

Family flowers only, please. Donations in memory of Danny for the Merevale House Residents Fund may be placed in the donation boxes at the Church and Crematorium.

All are warmly welcome to Wood End Club following the service to share memories and celebrate Danny’s life.

Danny will be remembered with love, warmth, and fondness by all who knew him.
