๐Ÿง๐Ÿ‹ Baking up smiles at Avondale ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿง

Our residents had a wonderful time taking part in Baking Club, led by Shaun from our Activities & Wellbeing team. Together, they baked delicious lemon, turmeric and poppy seed cupcakes, filling the home with tempting aromas and plenty of conversation.

Baking is a fantastic activity for people living with dementia, supporting memory, coordination and sensory engagement, while also encouraging teamwork and confidence. Residents loved measuring, mixing and being involved every step of the way. ๐Ÿ’›

The best part? Sharing and enjoying the finished cakes with the rest of the residents, a lovely moment of pride and togetherness for everyone involved. โ˜•โœจ

A truly rewarding session from start to finish!

As part of our weekly Activities & Wellbeing schedule, we were delighted to welcome a new performer, Victoria Elizabeth Vocals, into our home to celebrate Rock & Roll Day, and what a fantastic afternoon it was!

Live music is especially powerful for people living with dementia, helping to spark memories, encourage engagement and create moments of connection through familiar songs and styles.

Weโ€™re so pleased to welcome Victoria as part of our entertainment programme and look forward to many more performances like this at Avondale. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ”ค๐Ÿ† World Scrabble Day at Avondale ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ”ค

Our residents marked World Scrabble Day with a fun and friendly Scrabble tournament, and the competition was fierce in the very best way!

Games like Scrabble are a brilliant way to support memory, concentration and language skills, especially for people living with dementia, all while enjoying laughter, conversation and a bit of healthy rivalry. ๐Ÿ’™

From clever word choices to shared smiles and encouragement around the table, it was a thoroughly engaging morning that everyone enjoyed. A wonderful reminder that staying mentally active can be just as joyful as it is beneficial.
Well played to all our wordsmiths! โœจ

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’™ Supporting strength, movement and confidence at Avondale ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Weโ€™re proud to offer our residents 1โ€‘toโ€‘1 gym sessions as part of our weekly Activities & Wellbeing schedule, all within our very own onโ€‘site gym. Having these facilities in the home means residents can enjoy safe, supported movement in a familiar environment, and they really do make the most of it!

Regular movement plays a vital role in supporting strength, balance and coordination, helping residents maintain independence and confidence in their everyday lives. These personalised sessions are tailored to individual abilities and focus on what matters most to each person.

Weโ€™re also delighted to work alongside Physiohealinghands Physiotherapy and wellness, our resident physiotherapist, offering private sessions, ensuring residents receive professional guidance and support as part of their wellbeing journey. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ

Because at Avondale, movement really is key.

โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŽถ Fun in the sun at Avondale ๐ŸŽถโ˜€๏ธ

We made the most of the sunshine with a wonderful afternoon of music in the garden, sunglasses on, suncream applied, and smiles all round! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒฟ

At 3pm, residents enjoyed afternoon tea freshly served by Chef Vas, while our very own resident DJ, Shaun from the Activities & Wellbeing team, kept the atmosphere lively by taking music requests on our mobile music trolley. ๐ŸŽต๐Ÿ’›

Music, fresh air and familiar routines are so important for wellbeing, especially for people living with dementia. The combination of favourite songs, social time and being outdoors create a relaxed, joyful space for everyone to enjoy together.

A lovely afternoon making memories in the sunshine. โ˜•๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒž

๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŽจ A look back at some Easter creativity at Avondale ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿฃ

Although weโ€™re a little late sharing, we couldnโ€™t miss the chance to look back at some of the Easter fun enjoyed at Avondale last week.

Residents got creative designing colourful Easter bonnets and carefully decorating eggs, enjoying relaxed, joyful activities filled with conversation, laughter and creativity. Activities like these are especially meaningful for people living with dementia, encouraging selfโ€‘expression, supporting fine motor skills and sparking familiar seasonal memories. ๐Ÿ’›

It was lovely to see everyone so engaged and proud of their creations. Sometimes itโ€™s the simple moments that bring the biggest smiles. ๐ŸŒธ

Today is World Parkinson's Day, which is marked annually on the birthday of James Parkinson, the first person to recognise Parkinson's as a medical condition.

On this day, Parkinson's UK hopes to educate the public on the challenges individuals living with Parkinson's and their loved ones face, as well as encourage people to fundraise for Parkinson's research and support services.

Here at Porthaven Care Homes, we are dedicated to providing compassionate, research-driven care for our residents living with Parkinson's today and always ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿงถ๐Ÿ’™ Knitting, memories and meaningful connection ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงถ

Our knitting club came together in the Dickens Lounge last week, continuing work on our sweater project in a calm, familiar and social space.

Knitting is a deeply meaningful activity for many people living with dementia. The rhythm of the needles, the feel of the wool and the familiar skills help support muscle memory, focus and wellbeing, while also creating space for conversation and storytelling.

Over cups of tea and friendly chat, residents shared why knitting has been such an important part of their lives, not just as a hobby, but as a lifelong skill woven into family, work and identity. ๐Ÿ’›

By the end of the session, we had proudly created five more squares for the sweater, a lovely example of teamwork, purpose and connection.
Weโ€™re already thinking aheadโ€ฆ what should we make next together? ๐Ÿงตโœจ
