Sore throats are no fun, but they usually clear up within a week. Here are some tips to ease the discomfort and speed up your recovery:
โจ Gargle with warm, salty water (not for young children)
๐ง Stay hydrated with plenty of water
๐ฅค Try cool or soft foods
๐ญ Avoid smoking or smoky places
๐ฆSuck on ice cubes, ice lollies, or hard sweets (not for young children)
๐ด Rest up
For extra relief, our Pharmacists at Consult Pharmacy recommend for colds:
๐ค Pain relief options like paracetamol or ibuprofen
๐ฌ Medicated lozenges with local anaesthetics, antiseptics, or anti-inflammatory agents
๐จ Anaesthetic sprays (although their effectiveness is limited)
โ Remember, antibiotics aren't usually needed for sore throats unless it's a bacterial infection.
At Consult Pharmacy, our pharmacists will assess your symptoms and medical history to rule out any underlying issues through the Pharmacy First NHS Service. We may suggest over-the-counter products or, if necessary, provide antibiotics.
Please note, the Pharmacy First service is available for ages 5 and up.
