Most people don’t know how the nervous system works because no one taught them to look there.
They’re taught to manage thoughts, emotions, behaviours, symptoms. Very few are taught that all of those are outputs, not causes.
So clients arrive believing something is “wrong with them,” when in fact their system is doing exactly what it was trained—often brilliantly, to do.
The nervous system isn’t a department inside the body. It’s the operating system. Everything else runs on top of it.
Think of it this way: before hormones act, before the immune system mobilises, before digestion starts, before thought even forms, the nervous system sets the global mode.
Safe mode or survival mode.
Build, repair, connect, or defend, conserve, brace. That choice governs blood flow, inflammation, gene expression, pain thresholds, attention, memory, even identity.
It’s not a single control centre either.
It’s a distributed network.
Brainstem, vagus nerve, heart, gut, fascia, sensory receptors in the skin and joints, all talking constantly.
That’s why calling it “the brain” is misleading.
Much of the decision-making never goes anywhere near the cortex.
What’s extraordinary is that this network is predictive. It doesn’t just react, it anticipates.
Based on past experience (including inherited patterns), it guesses what’s about to happen and prepares in advance.
When those predictions are wrong but never corrected, because the environment never truly feels safe, the system gets stuck running outdated software.
That’s why the body can feel threatened in perfectly calm situations, and why safety has to be felt, not explained.
So yes: it’s the primary command control.
Not authoritarian, not rational, protective. Loyal to survival above all else.
And once you understand that, a lot of human behaviour stops looking irrational and starts looking tragically intelligent.
And here’s something important: people don’t know this not because they’re unaware or uneducated, but because the nervous system is mostly invisible when it’s dysregulated. Like a fish not knowing what water is, until it’s removed from it.
