Yoga: This week we are looking at Pranayama - the breathing exercises of Yoga. Pranayama consists of two Sanskrit words - Prana = life force - Ayama = to extend. Simplified we can say that slow breathing extends our lifespan. We have been looking at basic diaphragmatic breathing this week. Moving away from thoracic - upper chest breathing - to diaphragmatic breathing. Upper chest breathing (shallow, short breaths) is connected with stress and will create a lot of tension in the neck, upper chest, shoulders and upper back. . When breathing we should be using the muscles in the upper chest 20% and the intercostal muscles (in the lower ribcage) 80% of the time. Here is a blog article I wrote about this a while ago. You will also find a simple exercise there.
How to breathe correctly using the diaphragm. This will result in better sleep, more relaxation and better health.
