Urban Balance Yoga

Urban Balance Yoga Hatha yoga teacher I struggled through my first couple classes with my anxiety, but soon found that I was able to relax more quickly each time I got on the mat.

I started practising yoga in my mid-twenties and soon found myself wanting to go just for the feeling I would get at the end – the thought of 10 minutes of peace and relaxation in savasana, and leaving the class in a feel-good bubble - would get me there even on the days when I really didn’t feel up to it! I dipped in and out of classes over the next few years, and it wasn’t until I moved to New Zealand that I started to build a more regular practice and love for yoga. I have suffered with anxiety and panic attacks through most of my adult life, and during a particularly difficult time with this when I was first living in Auckland, I remembered that yoga classes would often help bring me a bit of calm when I was extremely anxious. From then on I made yoga a more frequent part of my life. Because for me, yoga brings me out of my head and into my body (something I desperately need!), and it encourages me to tune in to myself and listen to what my body is telling me. By focusing on my body, movement, and my breath I am able to connect in with my body and let go of a busy mind – at least while I’m on the mat!

Postnatal yoga is back in a fortnight!

We start again on Tuesday 27th Jan @ Chasing Joy

As the first two classes are during the holidays I will be bringing my 7 year old, and you are welcome to bring older children too - just flick me a message and let me know. They’ll be set up with some crafting activities at the back of the room!

Looking forward to seeing you then

✨ Yesterday evening in our journal circle we were talking, and journaling, about stillness. And about how often we stay busy to avoid the discomfort of being still. Definitely something that I have struggled with over the years.

The mind body connection is a powerful one. For me, physical stillness typically leads to mental overwhelm. But, when I get into my body (for example, by moving my body, or having a massage) then my mind slows down. Changes in my physical body create mental space and presence.

Equally, it goes the other way too. I went out on my paddle board this weekend for the first time in about 4 years. People assume that because I’m a yoga teacher I have great balance on the board, but that’s just not the case. I’ve always struggled with it, and even more so after a long pause. And it’s a mental thing more than a physical one.

I get into my head the second I step onto the board and doubt myself. This thought knocks me off balance mentally, and the mental worry translates into shaking legs, and more unsteadiness.

So this time, I slowed it down. I reminded myself that probably nobody was looking at me or judging me. (And if they were, let them). And I didn’t have to get up to standing. Instead, I sat and slowly paddled, just allowing my body and nervous system to settle.

And in time they did. I had a couple of standing wobbles (and falls!), but most of the time I stayed sitting. I had the best time, and found quite a few glimmers - moments of peace and calm and hope.

✨ Giving ourselves permission to be - just where we are - is something I’ve come to realise is SO important. Whether that’s physically, or mentally - or maybe like me a necessary combination of the two.

✨ Hoping you all can find a moment or two to go gently today 💛

There has been so much "new year, new you" messaging over the last week and truthfully we've been hesitant to add to the noise. Especially when there is so much focus on the way your body looks, weight loss and achieving miracle transformations. Instead we prefer to think about helping you to feel your very best, to carve time out of your busy life to slow down, switch off and unplug, and to find an escape that works for you.

For us, a swim is so much more than the number of lengths. It's the hour away from a phone (and emails and messages and social media), it's the enforced mindfulness that comes from focusing on your breathing and the sound of the water, and the immersion into the safe and friendly space that comes with a swimming pool or outdoor swim spot (goodbye alpha gym bunnies and checked in fitness posts).

We've never gotten out of the water without feeling so much better than we did getting in. So in 2018 we hope to see you in the pool. 🏊‍♀️🙂💦

Our Story

I've been practising yoga for more than a decade now, after discovering it in my mid twenties, and it has been a part of my life ever since. It has been the best treatment for the anxiety and panic attacks I've suffered with on and off for years. People talk about (and tend to focus on!) the physical benefits of yoga but in fact, for me, the mental ones are much greater. I've tried many types of yoga and have enjoyed the challenges of each but I find hatha is the perfect combination - the connection of the breath to the body and the benefits for mental and physical heath - yoga is not just about headstands!
