Urban Balance Yoga

Urban Balance Yoga Hatha yoga teacher I struggled through my first couple classes with my anxiety, but soon found that I was able to relax more quickly each time I got on the mat.

I started practising yoga in my mid-twenties and soon found myself wanting to go just for the feeling I would get at the end – the thought of 10 minutes of peace and relaxation in savasana, and leaving the class in a feel-good bubble - would get me there even on the days when I really didn’t feel up to it! I dipped in and out of classes over the next few years, and it wasn’t until I moved to New Zealand that I started to build a more regular practice and love for yoga. I have suffered with anxiety and panic attacks through most of my adult life, and during a particularly difficult time with this when I was first living in Auckland, I remembered that yoga classes would often help bring me a bit of calm when I was extremely anxious. From then on I made yoga a more frequent part of my life. Because for me, yoga brings me out of my head and into my body (something I desperately need!), and it encourages me to tune in to myself and listen to what my body is telling me. By focusing on my body, movement, and my breath I am able to connect in with my body and let go of a busy mind – at least while I’m on the mat!

🌕 Full Circle — “Taking Up Space”

Who am I when I strip away the expectations, roles, and shoulds?

If I allowed myself to fully take up space, who would I be? Where have I hidden parts of myself I thought were better left unseen?

Join us to gently explore through guided writing, and shared reflection, in the last event in this introductory series. We come together in circle and together we pause.

You’ll leave feeling grounded, ready for your week ahead.

Writing doesn't just help you process your thoughts.

Neuroscientists have found it physically changes your brain in ways that build resilience and help you handle everyday stress and challenges.

✨ Sometimes the stories we tell ourselves are so ingrained that we don’t question them. We believe them to be true because we’re so used to hearing them.

✨ But what if they’re not? What if you gift yourself the space to pause, and to reflect? Our minds often run along automatic pathways - the ones we’ve always followed. Our brains prefer the routes already taken. But we can re-learn, and start to treat ourselves, to see ourselves, more kindly.

✨ It starts with reflection. A pause.

Can you carve out 10-15 minutes for yourself today? To reflect on a story you have been telling yourself this week.

💫 If you’re interested in learning and exploring more, save your space with us on Sunday, in a space designed for you to pause, write, and share in safe community.

💫 Join us for the last free taster session before the full circle starts in a little over a fortnight. Those who attend will be eligible for exclusive discounts on the full circle.

This week I’ve been telling myself a number of negative stories - that I’m not good enough (a lot of imposter syndrome going on here!), some around having huge health anxiety, and generally second guessing myself in all areas.

I’m really good at these stories, and I find myself stuck in them really easily. And it’s because they’ve been stuck on repeat for a long time; they are stories I have told myself over and over again. I can’t think my way out of these stories. Thinking makes them worse.

Instead I have to ground myself. Today it’s sitting at the beach feeling the wind in my face, drinking a really good cup of coffee. And letting that be my focus. And then later, when I have some time and space, I will give myself the time to reflect and process.

Today, I’m going to reflect on these beautiful words below

✨ Set aside a pocket of time for you today (schedule it in!) - even if it’s 10 minutes. Get a pen and a piece of paper. Or your child’s felt tip pens. Spend some time with yourself. See what comes up. And see how you feel afterwards.

I’d love to hear how it lands for you.

Our Story

I've been practising yoga for more than a decade now, after discovering it in my mid twenties, and it has been a part of my life ever since. It has been the best treatment for the anxiety and panic attacks I've suffered with on and off for years. People talk about (and tend to focus on!) the physical benefits of yoga but in fact, for me, the mental ones are much greater. I've tried many types of yoga and have enjoyed the challenges of each but I find hatha is the perfect combination - the connection of the breath to the body and the benefits for mental and physical heath - yoga is not just about headstands!

Training:

Ashram Yoga Level 1 (200hr) Yoga Teacher Training (Auckland, New Zealand; April -October 2016)

Yoga Medicine Essentials - Spine, Hip & Myofascial Release (Gisborne, New Zealand; August 2019)
