Urban Balance Yoga

Urban Balance Yoga Hatha yoga teacher I struggled through my first couple classes with my anxiety, but soon found that I was able to relax more quickly each time I got on the mat.

I started practising yoga in my mid-twenties and soon found myself wanting to go just for the feeling I would get at the end – the thought of 10 minutes of peace and relaxation in savasana, and leaving the class in a feel-good bubble - would get me there even on the days when I really didn’t feel up to it! I dipped in and out of classes over the next few years, and it wasn’t until I moved to New Zealand that I started to build a more regular practice and love for yoga. I have suffered with anxiety and panic attacks through most of my adult life, and during a particularly difficult time with this when I was first living in Auckland, I remembered that yoga classes would often help bring me a bit of calm when I was extremely anxious. From then on I made yoga a more frequent part of my life. Because for me, yoga brings me out of my head and into my body (something I desperately need!), and it encourages me to tune in to myself and listen to what my body is telling me. By focusing on my body, movement, and my breath I am able to connect in with my body and let go of a busy mind – at least while I’m on the mat!

Read this today as I was enjoying some quality time by myself - and it reminded me of not only the ways I try to allow and make space for myself, but also the ways in which I try to encourage or hold space for others - and why.

Sunday thought - what are the ways you’d like to allow or make space for yourself this coming week? Time to breathe, and time to be.

Last night was my first class back - felt so good to be back in this space once more, sharing what I love, and hearing what others love about it too.

Today I’m enjoying the sunshine, listening to the birds singing around me, and feeling my cup starting to fill again after a week of sickness and feeling pretty sorry for myself!

Can’t wait to be back next Wednesday again at Maraetai Community Hall, and to get some more classes up and running soon!!

Morning all. Apologies but tonight’s class is cancelled due to illness - I have been hit with a nasty cold/virus and don’t want to share it!

So disappointed as I am, our first class back is postponed to next week.

Please share with anyone you know who was planning to attend

Kia ora all

Urban Balance Yoga started back in 2018 when I first moved to Maraetai and taught my first beach yoga class - from which began to grow a community.

Despite the continued growth and success of my classes over the next four years, I still occasionally felt that I wasn’t ‘good enough’ to be a yoga teacher. I also had other employment and this, together with my imposter syndrome, meant that I treated my yoga business almost like a hobby.

3.5 years away from New Zealand have taught me a lot of things; one of which is that I am good enough. I still can’t do handstands or headstands, but I no longer believe that is what makes a really ‘good’ yoga teacher. I am proud of the community I built, and I know I am good at what I do - bringing others together, holding space, and offering people chances to reconnect with their bodies as a way to find a little stillness.

As I return to Maraetai next week, and start up my business again, I do it with a commitment to myself that yoga is not just my hobby. It is my passion and my employment. As I start to offer classes again, prices will be updated slightly to reflect this. I do this to ensure that my business is sustainable as well as to bring my classes in line with others.

I am so grateful for the ongoing support I have had in this community, and I am so grateful to be returning to share this space with you all.

Our Story

I've been practising yoga for more than a decade now, after discovering it in my mid twenties, and it has been a part of my life ever since. It has been the best treatment for the anxiety and panic attacks I've suffered with on and off for years. People talk about (and tend to focus on!) the physical benefits of yoga but in fact, for me, the mental ones are much greater. I've tried many types of yoga and have enjoyed the challenges of each but I find hatha is the perfect combination - the connection of the breath to the body and the benefits for mental and physical heath - yoga is not just about headstands!

Training:

Ashram Yoga Level 1 (200hr) Yoga Teacher Training (Auckland, New Zealand; April -October 2016)

Yoga Medicine Essentials - Spine, Hip & Myofascial Release (Gisborne, New Zealand; August 2019)
