It is with great sadness that we join our country and reluctantly acknowledge the passing of our Queen, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

With her tireless and faultless devotion and service to our country and all its people it will be hard to imagine life without her in the background, and when her country required it, in the foreground addressing the nation.

It has been estimated that the average human contains around 100 billion neurones and even more supporting cells .. that's a lot of potential cellular chatter and communication!

While genetics and disease may take its effect other modifiable factors such as diet ad life style can and will impact on the healthy functioning of the brain.

Studies on a specific antioxidant with B-vitamin-like activity known as pyrroloquinoline quinone, or PQQ for short, is revealing some interesting findings that can be summarised in an infographic viewable here:https://www.supersupps.com/downloads/product_files/1039/Download-Brain-Health-Infographic.pdf

Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, has established itself as an effective supplement to support poor hair and nail health but at intake levels often higher that can be obtained by diet alone.

While biotin is considered a safe supplement studies now suggest that high intake levels can interfere with blood tests for thyroid function.

It is recommended that people having blood taken for thyroid hormones should stop their high dose biotin supplements for a week before the test and re-start once the blood has been taken to be on the safe side and minimise the risk of a false result.

The levels of biotin found in multi vitamin product should not affect thyroid blood tests, this advise is for those taking the high dose intake levels.

Read more on our biotin product page where you can find a link to the study: https://www.supersupps.com/biotin-60-veg-caps/product/1079

Berberine is a compound found in specific plant species and has become a popular remedy used in many forms of traditional healing. Modern research into this compound has revealed interesting properties in regards to sugar metabolism, weight regulation and gut health which you can read more about here:https://www.supersupps.com/downloads/product_files/1145/Berberine%20HCl%20Product%20Information.pdf

However, this compound has become a victim of its own success and the natural habitat in which it grows (the Himalayan low mountains) has become over harvested and striped.

Thankfully, we can present you with a sustainably sourced and wildcrafted berberine product that safeguards the habitat and protects the natural cycle of growth, harvest and regrowth.

Please share this with your friends and help us supply an ethically sourced natural product that is both good for your health and good for the natural habitat. See: https://www.supersupps.com/berberine-hcl-250mg/product/1145

What we now view as old-world and quaint was in its day cutting edge and the height of sophistication in the field of dispensing. Life and things move on and in many ways ultimately for the good of all but you do get the feeling that the personal touch and many aspects of control and decision making is lost with our modern health care system. This image was taken some years ago in the Polish city of Krakow in their museum of Pharmacy.

The reason for this story is to raise the thought that while we don’t want to drift back to the days of old we can still take control of our health even in situations where illness does require therapy that can make a person feel a good bit out of control with the whole process of getting well.

Consider focusing on the modifiable factors that are well within the control of all such as dietary and lifestyle changes. Naturally one can glean a lot of help from personal research online or from books but professional help is always at hand to get things started if its all a bit daunting (https://www.hhc.healthcare/services/naturopathy)

A good example is the adoption of the Mediterranean diet, often known as the anti-inflammatory diet in cases of inflammatory disease. Simple dietary changes over time can make a real impact on joint pains for example.

Boosting key nutrients such as the Omega-3 oils derived from fatty fish are a key part of this approach for which supplements can form an important factor if you are not all that keen on oily fish or choose to eat it infrequently. In these cases simply taking a capsule on no-fish eating days will bridge the gap nicely and help ensure a steady intake level over time. Our Omega-3 50:20 blend (https://www.supersupps.com/omega-3-50-20/product/1028) delivers a high level of key omega-3’s in one capsule. A vegan version is available for non-fish eaters (https://www.supersupps.com/vegan-omega-3-algal-dha-epa-30-capsules/product/1132)

We can learn a great deal from history but we can also gain so much benefit from modern discoveries.. getting the balance is key.

As the long month of January crawls to a close we are all looking more optimistically to a more normal life and a return to activities. For many this will include sports, exercise and a return to the gym but from such a sedentary phase getting back into the stride of things needs to take time. Strains and pains are often an acceptable risk of an active sporting existence and the use of a little known dietary supplement called MSM may help. MSM, short for methylsulfonylmethane, is a naturally occurring compound that donates sulphur to the body once broken down. Suphur is important for several functions including support of connective tissue and skin health.
For more details on the effects of MSM follow this link https://www.supersupps.com/opti-msm-1000mg-90-tablets/product/72 to the OptiMSM page and click on the ‘More information’ tab where you can down load information sheets on its effects in Sports and Exercise and Skin Health as well as some details on the science of MSM and a great over view article.

It’s all going to look brighter from now as we past the Winter Solstice* yesterday. This means that every day will be that little bit longer as we move towards Spring and Summer.

Despite having a chunk of Winter to get through we can start to enjoy longer and lighter days ahead which can only be good!

Before everybody decends into holiday mode I would like to wish all our FB followers a lovely time from all of us at Hadley Wood Healthcare both in Barnet and Ayr.

It has been another of ‘those years’ but we have all come though it and can set our sights on the New Year and all it has to bring.

See our home page (https://www.hhc.healthcare) for clinic times but rest assured we are always around if needed through email or FB message and will aim do what we can if we can.

Best wishes from us all.

(* Solstice from the Latin ‘sol’ meaning Sun and ‘sistere’ meaning to stand still. At the Winter Solstice the Sun is seen at its lowest in the sky and this position remains the same at noon until a few days after this point in the calendar. From this point on, the Sun will sit higher in the sky and give us more daylight / longer days)

Morning all, this 4min video summarises the findings so far from an ongoing study into the benefits of multivitamins in older people in regards to the onset of age related mental decline … here is the spoiler; it looks like there might be a significant benefit .. no great surprise but nice to see the ‘science’ catching up with the observation .. click through to hear the fuller story.

A simple, widely available intervention could reduce cognitive aging by almost 2 years, if further studies confirm the findings from COSMOS-Mind.

While the effects of the new viral strain is making itself felt those still recovering from the aftermath of a nasty illness from earlier infection are still looking for 'Long-COVID' answers.

Sadly, there are not many good answers to give at the moment.

A previous post outlined the possible time line for long-haulers using the data that was available at the time but it was not great reading.

Interestingly, some 'Long-COVID' sufferers are finding some benefit in tweakling their diets to avoid foods that deliver higher levels of histamine as they find that these foods aggravate their fatigue and brain fog.

While there is no real evidence to say that this carries any scientific clout simply cutting some high histamine foods for a 2-4 weeks can do no harm and might offer some help.

Typical high histamine foods to try avoiding;

Avocado
Citrus fruits/juice
Strawberries
Kiwifruit
Papaya
Pineapple
Dried fruits
Tomatoes
Spinach
Most fish
Aged / cured meats
Aged cheeses
All wines (red worse than white)
Nuts
Chocolate
Vinegar
Fermented foods

Theory suggests that cells in the blood called mast cells might, and I say again might, be malfunctioning and contributing to the 'Long-COVID' symptom pattern by releasing more histamine than they should.

If you find this helps - do let us know and share with your friends if they are suffering.

Cheers, make mine a red wine.. it’s for medicinal reasons you understand…

Following on from my previous mind-gut post I thought you might like this diversion at this time of year.

Lifting a glass or two over the Winter months and at festive gatherings might not be so bad for your gut as you think. While alcohol moderation is naturally still advised, studies are clarifying the effects of different alcohols on the gut microbe population and the findings make for interesting reading.

When it comes to gut microbes it is not fairly well accepted that one can have a good or not so good gut microbe population and this does appear to have wide and diverse ramifications on our general health.

In general, the more diverse the population of good bugs the better and more robust our health appears to be.

When a study looking following a group of 916 UK female twins discovered that those who drank red wine had an increased gut microbiota diversity (a sign of gut health) compared to non-red wine drinkers as well as an association with lower levels of obesity and 'bad' cholesterol it becomes apparent that picking your tipple wisely is key. This was not observed with white wine, beer or spirits consumption. (The study had the catchy title Red Wine ‘Consumption Associated With Increased Gut Microbiota α-Diversity in 3 Independent Cohorts’ and was published in the journal Gastroenterology in August 2019). The study was not funded by the wine makers nor grape growers!

The exact mechanism behind this effect is not fully understood but the authors believe the main reason for the association is due to the many polyphenols in red wine. Polyphenols are defence chemicals naturally present in many fruits and vegetables. They have many beneficial properties (including antioxidants) and mainly act as a fuel for the microbes present in our system.

Extending this to our diet we can again see the benefit of daily fruits and vegetables on gut health and can now be assured that a glass or two of red wine might actually go to help our health along in a positive way but, as always, lift a glass in moderation.

Did you know that your gut, brain and immune system communicate and bananas might help it communicate better.

Once considered seperate we now have growing evidence that these complex systems are constantly chatting away and exchanging information relating to the environment we find ourselves in. As a result, our bodies can fine tune its reactions and prepare us to react and survive. These mechanisms are ancient and highly adaptive and have kept our ancestors of old safe when times were very harsh and dangerous.

The mechanisms behind this innate ability that has evolved over the millennia is slowly unravelling and we are learning how to best work with it so it can serve us in our modern age with its own set of perilous health challenges.

From today, you can make a start on enhancing your gut health and feeding the healthy bugs that are key to this communication effect. Start introducing foods such as garlic, onions, shallots, leeks, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, baked beans, soybeans, bananas, bran, oats, almonds, pistachio nuts and flaxseeds into your diet. As these contain natural pre-biotic compounds they feed the bacteria in your gut. By increasing these foods you might notice a little gas, wind and possibly some abdominal bloating in those very sensitive to this change. Experiment with the foods and work them in slowly. Home made soups are a great way to introduce a ‘dose’ of pre-biotics on a daily basis as many of these foods lend them selves to a great winter soup blend.

Do lateral flow tests detect the Omicron COVID variant?

As far as we know the simple answer is - YES.

Lateral Flow Tests will detect all COVID infections but can only, at best, say that you are positive for one of the growing number of varieties - it can't tell you which one.

According to the Metro, sources at the UK Health Security Agency say they have found no evidence that lateral flow tests, the most common rapid test available, will not detect the variant. (see: https://metro.co.uk/2021/11/28/do-lateral-flow-tests-detect-the-omicron-covid-variant-15679562/)

Lateral flow tests will not tell you whether you have the new variant rather than another COVID strain, as only PCR tests can be processed for DNA to reveal the exact virus and name-and-shame it!

So, carry on testing, keep calm and carry on ;-)

Additional information here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59460252

Scientists are cautiously optimistic that most standard rapid tests will work against the new variant - but warned more data is needed.
