Phileo Equine - UK & Ireland Our products harness the power of microbes to support digestive & immune function in horses & ponies. The Equine Microbiome - More than just gut health!

As the engine room, the hindgut microbiome is irreversibly linked to the overall health and welfare of all equines. To ensure optimum health and performance, we must support the microbial community within the hindgut. At Phileo by Lesaffre, we harness the power of microbes to support this engine room, which in turn supports digestive function, immunity, performance, fertility and welfare in all ages and performance levels of equines. No added chemicals, no magic powder, no unsubstantiated claims. Just microbiology at its best. Phileo by Lesaffre is the pioneering animal nutrition division of Lesaffre, a global leader in yeast and fermentation. We create baker’s yeast based feed additives that improve the gut health and performance of wide range of animals, including farm animals, pets and – of course – horses and ponies. Our expertise is built on a foundation of nearly 170 years of research and manufacturing, enabling us to get the best out of the microbiological world for the benefit of your horse. On the cutting edge of innovation, Phileo by Lesaffre has R&D divisions in Europe, North America and Asia, and our veterinarians and animal nutritionists work closely with our wider research teams.

How often do we write off our horses’ behaviour as personality – saying they’re “mare-ish”, “sharp”, or just “always been anxious”?

Growing evidence suggests some behavioural traits may be linked to gut microbial balance and the metabolites those microbes produce. In other words, what looks like attitude could be coming from their biology…

Understanding the gut-brain axis could change how we interpret behaviour and how we support horses that struggle.

We spend hours fine-tuning training plans, nutrition and recovery. But what if a horse’s mental wellbeing is just as critical to performance as physical fitness?

Emerging research shows that the gut microbiome communicates directly to the brain via the gut-brain axis, influencing mood, behaviour and resilience under pressure. A calm, trainable horse may start with what’s happening in their gut.

When Bert lost his long-term companion, the stress had a notable effect not only on his behaviour but also his health. After a lengthy process of elimination including a range of health checks by veterinarians, farriers and physiotherapists, Bert’s owner Juliet was at a loss on what to do next…

The gut-brain axis is a powerful communication system that links the hindgut microbiome and the brain, receiving a lot of attention in both human and equine research. Growing evidence shows that the microbes in the hindgut microbiome are influenced and altered by an increase in stress hormones.

Chronic or intense stress negatively impacts the microbiome, resulting in a cascade of events that impair gut integrity and leads to outward signs of ill health, systemic inflammation or changes in behaviour.

Horses deal with small stressors like new environments, changes in feed, time alone or travel. The diagram here illustrates the range of where this stress can come from, but this is not exhaustive.

However, when these build up they can take a toll on digestion and overall wellbeing.

Good management, steady routines and the right nutritional support can all help keep your horse’s gut in balance.

❄️ As we move through the changing seasons, it’s important to remember the impact these transitions can have on your horse’s gut health.

Seasonal shifts, particularly in temperature, forage availability, and feeding routines, can disrupt the delicate balance of the equine hindgut microbiome.
