One key part of a good equine assisted learning (EAL) session is providing the client with a safe and comfortable environment to be in. This enables the client to gain the maximum benefit and allows me to facilitate and guide them through the session. This image shows the horse’s ability to support each other when needed. The horse’s intuition to identify when help, reassurance and support are needed in a client is abundantly clear throughout the sessions I facilitate here. As much as possible ti conduct sessions in the field with the horses loose so they have complete control over when and if they interact with clients but they never cease to amaze me at how they pick up on the clients individual needs.

As always if you’d like to discuss sessions or simply want more information just get in touch. Free slots are becoming more limited

The most rewarding part of facilitating EAL sessions is seeing how people respond to the horses and what clients can gain from them. I recently conducted a session with a client who was struggling with confidence specifically when riding their own horse. Today I received word that not only have the points we discussed been helpful but they placed in their first dressage show. I am delighted that all of their hard work is paying off and that I could play a part in that journey.

If you feel you could benefit from EAL or even just want to discuss it feel free to message for a no pressure chat

Over the past few weeks I’ve had lots of enquires from people who can’t make it to my base here outside Ballymena. I’ve attached a link to the national register to make it easy for anyone to find other practitioners that are closer to you.

The horses have been enjoying the heat here (all with sun cream and fly spray as needed). Luckily they managed to be awake long enough for a very productive session mid week where we discussed self confidence and belief. In a field of 5 loose horses Sunny chose to come and interact with the client as they went through the session. Again proving the power and ability of the horse to be present in the moment with us

The power of horses never ceases to amaze me. I recently facilitated a series of sessions where the clients focus was on reducing stress levels. We worked through an exercise using cones to represent starting point, end goals and the obstacles in the way. Throughout all of these sessions the client did not wish to vocalise what these obstacles were. I wanted to share this to demonstrate that all sessions are very much client led and there is no pressure to talk or say anything you don’t feel comfortable with. Even is you don’t say it out the loud the horses still know what your feeling. Feel free to get in touch to find out more about the sessions

Every horse owners favourite time of the year is seeing all the horses out for the first time each spring. So nice to see them all happy, free and enjoying a good run around

If you feel that you, your child or someone you know would benefit from EAL sessions but worry it might be a sensory overload please feel free to get in touch and I can arrange a time for a meet and greet. In this way we can introduce them to the yard, the animals, the sights, sounds, smells and to myself without the pressure of an actual session. I believe this helps to facilitate a more relaxed frame of mind to help achieve the maximum benefit from the sessions and allows a face to face discussion about what is wanted from the sessions to enable a more detailed and personalised approach from the start

I’ve been asked numerous times about what is EAL and I think the shortest description is that it is a therapeutic intervention whereby I don’t dwell on the past but help the client aim for the future they want. All sessions are completely led by the client and as such the amount of information they wish to discuss is up to them. I have facilitated sessions whereby we used objects to represent obstacles preventing a client achieving their goals but the only one who knew what each obstacle represented was the client. Saying that the horse still picked up and everything the client was thinking and the client made some major breakthroughs to reducing the stress levels in their daily lives.

I wanted to share this with you to show that EAL really is for everyone and each session is individual and client focused.

A bit of alfresco dining and sun bathing was the order of the day for the horses and ponies here today. Hopefully some drier weather next week will mean our sessions can be held outside, the addition of fresh air and the views of the countryside add to the whole experience helping us to feel more present, calm and relaxed

As the facilitator running the sessions here at Beechview I (Andrew) has been granted accreditation with both the U.K. and Ireland branches of the HEIR (Human Equine Interactions Register. This means I have been assessed and to ensure I am qualified, insured and follow good practices in all aspects of my work. It is good to ensure these are in place so that all clients can know they are in good, safe hands.
As always if you’d like any more information do not hesitate to contact me. I have had a lot of enquiries recently and do endeavour to reply as quickly as possible

I am really humbled and delighted at the amount of support and interest this page has generated in a short space of time. To help ensure you keep informed about sessions and their benefit please ensure you have liked and followed the page. Attached is a picture of two of the horses here, Asha and Fudge, who believe it or not do have a bucket of feed each but seem to like to share

A huge part of a successful EAL session is the ability of the horse or pony to behave normally, for this to happen they have to be happy, comfortable and well cared for. The horses welfare is very important to me, they get turned out daily, always live in spacious, clean barns with access to food, water, clean bedding and company. I am very lucky to have the facilities to enable me to keep the horses in this manor. I have to thank Ballynamaddy Farm for providing me with top quality haylage to keep all the horses well fed and ready to work in the therapeutic sessions.

Today I facilitated a session working alongside one of my ponies, Dunnie. In this session we discussed various topics including self esteem, worth and care. The client set themselves some goals to help them take some time to simply be and look after themselves. Throughout the session Dunnie, who was loose at the time with no head collar on, chose to spend all her time with the client and comforted them when they felt overwhelmed. This highlights the fact that horses are always present with us in the moment and respond accordingly. We can not underestimate the power of the horse as a therapeutic animal. If you’d like anymore information regarding these sessions please do not hesitate to get in touch
