This picture was taken recently of Dame Judi Dench who has Macular Degeneration, and it is obvious when she said ‘I can’t see’ that it impacts on her quality of life .
This condition affects the central vision . It doesn’t cause total blindness as it doesn’t affect the peripheral vision. But it does mean you no longer can see the faces of those you love.

It is caused by a disruption of the layers of the macula. Typically affects us as we age
It is increasingly affecting younger people.

Genetics, Smoking, Poor Nutrition in terms of Antioxidants, UV light are amongst the most common causes. So eat your fruit and veg, ditch the ci******es and pop on the sunglasses. Unfortunately the genetics we can’t do anything about. Lastly keep your eye examinations up to date.
