School dinners are changing… but here’s what parents need to know 👇
The government is proposing updates to school food standards for the first time in over a decade.
The aim?
✔️ Improve nutrition
✔️ Reduce sugar and ultra-processed foods
✔️ Support children’s health
And on paper… that sounds like a really positive step.
But here’s what I see working with families every day 👇
If your child is a fussy or sensory eater, sudden changes to food can backfire.
Less familiar foods
More pressure to eat
Higher expectations
👉 often leads to:
food refusal
increased anxiety
or children eating less overall
And early trials are already showing some children are opting out of school meals altogether
So this isn’t about whether the changes are “good” or “bad”…
It’s about recognising that:
👉 Children don’t just need healthier food
👉 They need support to learn how to eat it
Because without that…
More rules ≠ better eating

There’s a reason behind it—and there is a way forward.
