My work is guided by a simple purpose — to help people feel safe, calm, and empowered from within. After over 35 years in healthcare, including NHS and senior leadership roles, I followed my path into Solution-Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy, bringing together neuroscience, compassion, and intuition to support genuine change. I’m particularly passionate about helping people facing medical treatment,

surgery, or radiotherapy, where mind-body tools can make a profound difference to comfort and wellbeing. Sessions available in Belfast, Lisburn, Garvagh, and online.

Many people are surprised by how strongly their body reacts during an MRI scan.
It’s not always about the space itself.
Often, it’s the brain recognising a situation where movement is restricted — and responding automatically.
Once that response has been learned, it can start to show up earlier each time.
The encouraging part is that this can change.

Stress doesn’t always feel emotional.
Very often it shows up physically in the body — through symptoms like jaw tension, bladder urgency, digestive discomfort or sleep disruption.
These patterns are often connected to how the nervous system responds to pressure.
Understanding that connection is often the first step toward helping those symptoms settle.

Many people are surprised how often stress shows up physically rather than emotionally. I work with clients on this at my Garvagh clinic.

Many people hold tension in their jaw throughout the day without realising it — often while concentrating, working, or dealing with pressure.
When the nervous system stays slightly on alert, certain muscles can remain activated.
Over time the brain begins treating that level of tension as normal.
As the nervous system settles again, the body often releases that tension automatically.

Daytime jaw clenching is extremely common when the nervous system has been under pressure. I work with clients on this at my Ballymoney clinic.

Many people only realise they’ve been clenching their jaw when they wake up with headaches or facial tension.
Their jaw feels tired, their temples ache, and sometimes their teeth feel sensitive.
Often the reason is the nervous system staying in a slightly alert state during sleep.
When the brain remains on guard, certain muscles — especially the jaw — can stay activated overnight.
Helping the nervous system settle often allows those muscles to relax naturally.

Nausea doesn’t always come from the chemotherapy itself.
Sometimes, it begins before anything has even happened.
The brain can link certain sights, smells, or environments with a previous experience of feeling unwell — and respond early.
It can feel confusing, especially when you know nothing has started yet.
The encouraging part is that this is a learned pattern, and it can be changed.

Overthinking often increases before medical appointments.
Not because something is wrong —
but because the brain is trying to prepare.
It runs through possibilities, imagines outcomes, and tries to stay one step ahead.
But instead of helping, it often increases the pressure.
Sleep can be affected.
Focus shifts.
And by the time the appointment arrives, it already feels overwhelming.
This is a pattern — and it can change.
When the mind settles and the body feels more steady,
appointments can feel much more manageable.

Many people say the same thing to me.
Their bladder feels completely normal most of the time — until they start travelling.
The moment a journey begins, the urge suddenly appears, even if they’ve just used the toilet.
What’s often happening is the brain linking travel with the possibility of not reaching a toilet in time.
Once that association forms, the nervous system begins monitoring bladder sensations much more closely whenever travel starts.
As that pattern settles, people usually find they stop thinking about their bladder all the time.

A very common reaction to bladder urgency is drinking less water.
It seems logical — if you drink less, you’ll need the toilet less.
But when urine becomes more concentrated it can irritate the bladder lining and actually increase the feeling of urgency.
In many cases the real issue isn’t fluid intake at all.
The nervous system may simply be paying much closer attention to bladder signals.
When the brain becomes less reactive to those signals, the bladder usually begins returning to a more normal rhythm.

Drinking less water seems logical when bladder urgency appears, but it can sometimes increase bladder sensitivity. I work with clients on this at my Ballymoney clinic , helping calm the nervous system patterns involved.

Many people feel confused when bladder tests come back normal but the urgency continues.
They’ve seen their GP, the bladder and prostate have been checked, and everything appears healthy.

In many cases the issue isn’t the bladder itself but the signalling system between the bladder and the brain.
When the nervous system becomes more alert, the brain starts paying closer attention to bladder sensations.
And the more attention the brain gives those signals, the stronger they can feel.
Helping the nervous system settle often allows those signals to return to a more normal rhythm.

Many people feel confused when medical tests are normal but urgency continues. I work with clients on this at my Garvagh clinic, helping retrain the brain–bladder signalling pattern.

Bladder urgency often appears in very specific situations.
Driving long distances.
Travelling.
Sitting in meetings.
Anywhere toilets might not be immediately available.
When the nervous system becomes more alert in those environments, the brain begins monitoring bladder sensations much more closely.
And attention amplifies sensation.

Understanding this brain–bladder connection is often the first step toward helping the pattern settle.

One of the things I love most about my work is seeing people enjoy life again in situations that used to feel impossible.
This client originally came to see me because fear of heights was limiting holidays and family experiences.
Today she sent me this photo from the top of a viewing platform along with the message:
“Hypno still working for me. Thank you so much.”
Your brain can learn fear patterns — but it can also learn safety again.

Bladder urgency isn’t always about the bladder itself.
Many people I work with have had tests and scans that show their bladder is completely healthy.
But the urgency continues.
What’s often happening is the communication between the brain and the bladder has become over-sensitive.
When the nervous system has been under pressure, the brain starts paying much closer attention to bladder sensations.
And attention amplifies sensation.
So the same signal that once felt mild can suddenly feel urgent.
The encouraging thing is that these patterns are learned by the brain.
And anything the brain has learned, it can also learn to change.
In my work we help the nervous system become less reactive to those signals so the bladder can return to a more normal rhythm.
