Yesterday evening in Dunloy Presbyterian Church Hall, friends and family of Thomas & Helen Paul gathered to present a cheque for £8000 to Cancer Research UK.

Lisa Bailey (Relationship Manager for CRUK in Northern Ireland) and members of Ballymoney Cancer Research Committee were in attendance to receive the very generous amount that had been donated from half the proceeds of the sale of a Charolais bullock at Ballymena Livestock Mart (the other half of the money having gone to the work of Laurel House at Antrim Area Hospital) and a very successful afternoon tea held a few weeks earlier.

Speaking briefly, Helen thanked all those who had come and helped make the afternoon tea such a success. The donation was something that they had in mind after Thomas had received immunotherapy treatment which had been developed by scientists working for Cancer Research. This paved the way for other treatments that he was able to receive.

Lisa thanked everyone for the amazing amount that had been donated adding that it will help to fund world-class research taking place in Northern Ireland. She added that cancer doesn’t discriminate according to age or background, but new discoveries are giving patients and their families hope.

Mervyn Ferris, Chairman of the Ballymoney Committee, endorsed Lisa’s comments and spoke about the statistics relating to someone being directly affected by cancer being 1 in 2 people - in many cases family members and close friends. This is the reason why members of the committee get involved and are always so thankful for the support that they receive from organisations and members of the general public.

We never cease to be amazed by the generosity of people when they come together to support Cancer Research UK.

Another example of this is the afternoon tea which was held last Saturday in Dunloy Presbyterian Church Hall.

The venue was packed to capacity all afternoon and a large number of volunteers were on hand to serve the food and assist with parking.

We would like to show our appreciation to Thomas & Helen Paul who initiated the idea of the event, everyone who assisted them in any way and all who attended.

To date, the tremendous amount of £6150 has been donated as a result of the generosity of the general public.

Thank you to all who made this such a successful occasion.

Donations come to us in all shapes and sizes. They help Cancer Research UK do some tremendous work in finding cures and treatments. This story is about one of the more unusual donations.

Thomas Paul recently received treatment for cancer, using techniques that had been developed through the work of Cancer Research UK.

Thomas & his wife Helen very kindly donated a Charolais bullock for sale, with the proceeds being divided equally between Cancer Research UK & Laurel House cancer care unit at Antrim Area Hospital.

We were delighted to hear that the grand sum of £3200 was realised at the sale on Tuesday. Our thanks go not only to Thomas & Helen for their very kind donation but also to the generosity of those who took part in the bidding process.

A special mention must also go to JA McClelland & Sons (Auctioneers) Ltd at Ballymena Livestock Market for the professional way in which they promoted and conducted this special sale.

Street Collection of £10759.23 For Cancer Research

Cancer Research Ballymoney Committee are delighted to announce that £10759.23 has been donated by the people of Ballymoney and surrounding area in response to the Annual Street Collection and Band Parade on 2nd August 2025. Chairman Mervyn Ferris commented, “Once again we are indebted to the tremendous generosity of Ballymoney General Public, those who visit our parade, and the amazing team of collectors who gave of their time freely on Saturday 2nd August. We are also delighted in the number of bands taking part in our Annual Parade, many local and as far away as Coagh and Stewartstown. Feedback received indicate that this was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd of people attending.

There has been a real “buzz” about the town all week, the shopkeepers having dressed their shop windows pink in support of “Ballymoney Turns Pink” for Cancer Research, the proceeds of which was £2720.41. We would take this opportunity to thank the shopkeepers and the Ballymoney Chamber of Commerce for their support in what is the second year of this new initiative”

The organising committee wish to thank all those who took part in the car run, including members of the Ballymoney vintage car clubs, for providing the usual spectacular variety of vehicles for the viewing crowd prior to the Parade of Bands. There was again, an increase in the number of cars taking part, and in keeping with “Ballymoney Turns Pink” each had attached a pink ribbon to their vehicle.

We issue a big thank you to the 30 bands who responded to the invitation to take part in the fundraising parade in aid of Cancer Research.

This year’s parade was led by combined pipers representing Ballinrees , Garvagh Pipe Band, Grove and Kilrea bands, who set the tone for what was a marvellous parade and thoroughly appreciated by the generous members of the Public. The following bands were also in attendance.
