🌿 A simple calming activity for children 🌿

Sometimes children need help getting out of their busy thoughts and back into their body.

Try this simple activity together:

✨ Name 3 ✨

Ask your child to slowly name:
🤍 3 things they can see
🤍 3 things they can hear
🤍 3 things they can feel

You can make it playful:
🌿 “I can see the lamp.”
🌿 “I can hear birds.”
🌿 “I can feel my feet on the floor.”

This gentle activity can help children:

• slow down racing thoughts
• feel more present
• reconnect with their surroundings
• calm their body and brain

Simple grounding moments can make a big difference 🤍

Some children don’t stop thinking.

They replay conversations.
Worry about friendships.
Try to work everything out.
Ask lots of questions because their minds are searching for certainty.

These children are not “too sensitive”.
They are deeply aware 🤍

One of the most powerful things we can teach them is that not every feeling needs fixed, solved or figured out straight away.

Sometimes children simply need:
• reassurance
• connection
• calm
• space to feel safe

And slowly, over time, they begin to learn:

“I can feel worried and still be okay” 🤍

Sometimes children don’t need every answer straight away.

Sometimes they just need a calm grown-up beside them while they work through the feeling 🤍

Emotional wellbeing isn’t built in one big moment.

It grows in the small everyday moments:
• the cuddles
• the patience
• the repair after hard moments
• the “I’m here” again and again

Those little moments matter more than you realise 🌱

Some children don’t have the words to say,
“I’m feeling anxious.”

So instead, they say:
“I don’t want to go.”
“My tummy hurts.”
“Can you stay with me?”
“I can’t do it.”

Behind those words is often a child who feels overwhelmed, worried, unsure, or afraid of getting something wrong.

Children don’t need perfect responses from us.

They need calm adults who help them feel safe, understood, and supported through the hard moments 🤍

The more we understand what children’s behaviour might be communicating, the more connected and emotionally safe they can begin to feel.

If you’ve heard any of these phrases lately, you are not alone.

Sometimes understanding the feeling behind the behaviour can change everything 🤍

Some gentle reminders from my 1:1 sessions this week 🤍

Children don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on inside.

Sometimes it can look like:
• needing extra reassurance
• big feelings that come quickly
• finding change tricky
• lots of energy and movement
• struggling to slow down after a busy day
• needing time, patience and connection

This week we explored emotions through play, movement, creativity, stories and calming activities🌿

And one thing I always come back to is this:

Children don’t need perfection.
They need safe spaces, understanding, and adults who help them feel calm, seen and supported.

The small moments matter more than we realise 🤍

Sometimes children can’t explain what they’re feeling.

So instead, we might see it through:

• shouting
• refusing
• crying
• withdrawing
• getting frustrated quickly
• having big reactions over “small” things

But behaviour is often only the part we can see.

Underneath, there may be worry, overwhelm, tiredness, fear, frustration, or a child who simply doesn’t yet know how to manage what’s happening inside.

When we pause and look beneath the behaviour, we can begin to support the feeling underneath.

That’s where real emotional growth begins 🤍

Big feelings can come out in big ways.

But underneath it all, children are just trying to tell us something they don’t yet have the words for.

When we understand that, we can support them in a way that actually helps 🤍

Yesterday I spent the day in three different primary schools, supporting Primary 1 and Primary 2 children with calm and self-regulation 🤍

We talked about how big feelings (like worry, frustration or excitement) can make our bodies feel fast and busy… and how we can help them slow down.

One simple technique we practised:
🌸 Smell the flower (slow breath in through your nose)
🕯️ Blow the candle (gentle breath out through your mouth)

A really simple tool children can use at school, at home, or whenever those big feelings start to feel a bit overwhelming 🤍
