Let's talk about a common misunderstanding we often hear: that people with autism are aggressive or violent. The truth is, that's a myth.
What can sometimes look like an aggressive outburst is actually a sign of intense distress. For a child with autism, the world can feel overwhelming, and what you're seeing might be a reaction to:
Sensory Overload: The lights might be too bright, the sounds too loud, or the feeling of a tag on their shirt is unbearable. Their body is trying to cope with a sensory system that's on high alert.
Communication Frustration: They might be trying to communicate a need, emotion, or thought but lack the words or ability to do so, leading to incredible frustration.
Overwhelming Situations: An unexpected change in routine or a social situation they don't understand can trigger a feeling of chaos that they don't know how to navigate.
These aren't acts of malice. They're a child's way of signalling that they need help. At Kiera Groves EPS, we're here to help families and schools understand these signals, so we can work together to provide compassionate support and effective strategies.
Every child deserves to be understood. ❤️
