What is the crunching noise in my knee? So many patients wonder about the noises coming from their knees and whether they should be worried about them. The research says it is very common (41% of the population have them) and there is no reason to stop or halt all of your normal activities or sports, including running. Here is a lovely infographic on how common that crunching noise ('crepitus') is.

Noisy Knees – How common is it and does it matter?🦵

Have you ever wondered how common knee crepitus is, and whether it relates to pathology?

Pelvic position is so important during your exercises, whether they are strengthening or stretching exercises. Here is further evidence to suggest how important that 'posterior tilt' is that I sometimes harp on about! 🤣

💡The results showed that the posterior pelvic tilt stretching technique was effective in reducing the hip reactive flexor force when compared to conventional hip extension stretch.

👉🏻 This is from the new paper "Comparison of two different stretching strategies to improve hip extension mobility in healthy and active adults: a crossover clinical trial" by González-de-la-Flor et al 2024

Often patients ask me about arthritis. Sometimes they have been diagnosed with arthritis, but are not sure what 'type' of arthritis they have. Firstly my advice is to check that the person who 'diagnosed' you is a health care professional. Also it is a good idea to discuss this diagnosis with your GP. Your local Chartered Physiotherapist will provide you with treatment, and exercises which will help you manage your symptoms. Here is a link with a nice synopsis of the different 'types' of arthritis, and this website is generally a great resource for people who are managing their condition. There are also free classes that you can attend on your local area, and you can pick up great hints and tips about how to manage your symptoms.

Arthritis causes pain and inflammation. Learn about the causes, symptoms and treatments of different types of arthritis.

I recently had a lady in the clinic who wanted to avoid a total knee replacement at all 'costs'. I directed her to this article which she found very encouraging. Conservative treatment works too!!!

Most people with knee osteoarthritis can control their pain and improve their mobility without surgery, according to updated treatment guidelines. Here’s how.

As Physiotherapists we regularly see patients presenting with knee pain. The knee is a hinge synovial joint ie it opens and closes on one plane, however it is a 'complex' hinge synovial joint essentially involving two joints in one. The second joint lies anteriorly and involves the floating patella which lies in the trochlear groove of the femur. When patients present to the clinic the most common 'knee' injuries we see are meniscal/cartilage tears, and collateral ligament tears, however the remainder of injuries often lie in the category of 'anterior knee pain'. As you can see from this nice little graphic, anterior knee pain can be quite complex and identifying the drivers can be just as challenging. Also don't forget your pain can be referred from the hip and lumbar spine or other areas.
