Deaf Awareness Week
4th – 10th May

This week is about raising awareness, understanding, and supporting those who are deaf or living with hearing loss.

Hearing loss can affect people in different ways. For many, it develops gradually over time. That’s why awareness, early support, and open conversations are so important.

At The Sense of Hearing, we’re proud to support people in our community to hear as well as they can, with clear advice, personalised care, and the latest technology.

Simple things can make a big difference:
- Facing someone when speaking
- Reducing background noise
- Being patient and understanding

If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, or you’re supporting someone who has, don’t ignore it. Taking that first step can make everyday life easier, more connected, and more enjoyable.

What Happens at a Hearing Test?👂

If you’ve been putting off a hearing check because you’re not sure what to expect — here’s exactly what happens.

At The Sense of Hearing, a free hearing check takes around 60–90 minutes and is completely painless.

It starts with a relaxed chat about your lifestyle, work, and any situations where you’ve noticed hearing difficulties. This helps us understand what you’d like to improve.

We then carry out a full ear examination using a small instrument called an otoscope, allowing us to check for anything that might be affecting your hearing, such as wax build-up.

Next is the hearing test itself. You’ll wear headphones and listen to a series of tones, simply pressing a button whenever you hear a sound. It’s straightforward and usually takes around 20 minutes.

Afterwards, we talk you through your results in detail. You’ll see a clear visual of your hearing (called an audiogram), and we’ll explain what it means in a way that’s easy to understand.

If support would help, we’ll guide you through the options available, always tailored to your lifestyle, preferences, and budget.

There’s no pressure, just clear answers and expert advice.

If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, don’t wait, early support can make all the difference.

From identifying subtle hearing changes to helping you stay connected with the people and moments that matter most, an audiologist plays a key role in your overall wellbeing.

If you’ve noticed:
- Asking people to repeat themselves
- Turning the TV up louder than others prefer
- Struggling in noisy environments
it might be time to understand your hearing a little better.

We’ve put together a helpful guide explaining how audiologists support your hearing and the options available to you.

Spring Is a Good Time to Check Your Hearing 🌸

Spring is a season of fresh starts, so it’s a great time to check in on your hearing too.

If you’ve noticed the television creeping louder, asking people to repeat themselves more often, or struggling to follow conversations in busy places, it might be time for a hearing check.

Hearing changes often happen gradually, so it’s easy to put them down to background noise or people mumbling. But small signs can make everyday situations like phone calls, social gatherings, or watching TV, more tiring than they should be.

The good news is that checking your hearing is quick, simple, and can give you real peace of mind.

At The Sense of Hearing, we offer FREE hearing checks in a relaxed, friendly environment. Our audiologist, David Peel, will carefully assess your hearing and explain the results so you understand exactly what’s happening.

David can also talk you through the latest hearing technology designed to keep you connected to the people and sounds that matter most.

Call 01295 557008 to book your FREE hearing check and enjoy the season with clearer, more confident hearing.

There isn’t a single cure for tinnitus, but there are effective ways to reduce how much it affects you.

Management options may include:
• Hearing aids to reduce the contrast between tinnitus and everyday sounds
• Sound therapy such as background noise or white noise
• Relaxation and stress-management techniques
• Lifestyle changes such as protecting hearing and improving sleep routines
• Specialist support such as CBT

If tinnitus is starting to affect your day-to-day life, a hearing assessment can help you understand what’s contributing and what support may be right for you.
