Earwax: the surprising health indicator

Most of us think of earwax as a nuisance, but recent research shows it can actually reveal a lot about our health. Scientists have discovered that earwax may hold indicators of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even certain cancers.

This is because earwax reflects our body’s metabolism and can highlight changes that are harder to spot through other tests. In fact, researchers are developing a new tool called the cerumenogram, which could one day make routine health checks as simple as examining a small sample of earwax.

So, while it might not be everyone’s favourite topic, earwax is a fascinating and vital part of our wellbeing.

If you’re worried about earwax build-up or think it may be affecting your hearing, contact us on 01295 557008 – we’re here to help!

Geoff’s journey back to better hearing

Geoff had struggled for years with hearing loss. After spending £2,000 on hearing aids from a high street chain that never worked, he felt shut out of conversations and even family life.

That changed when he met David from The Sense of Hearing. During a visit, David discovered an old silicone dome from his previous hearing aids still lodged in Geoff’s ear. After removing it and carrying out a thorough hearing test, David fitted Geoff with hearing aids tailored to his needs.

The difference was immediate:
✨ Clear conversations
✨ TV back at a normal volume
✨ Music and family moments fully enjoyed again

Geoff says:
“The difference was phenomenal. I could be part of the conversation again. That meant everything.”

If you or a loved one are struggling with hearing loss, let us help you reconnect with the sounds that matter most.

Tinnitus is the name for hearing noises that aren’t caused by an outside source. It’s often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming sound in the ears, and for some, it’s there all the time.

Most cases of tinnitus are linked to hearing loss or other ear conditions, and it can affect your daily life. If you’ve noticed persistent sounds in your ears, the best first step is to get your hearing checked. A professional assessment can rule out simple causes (such as a build-up of earwax) and help you access support to manage your symptoms.

At The Sense of Hearing, we can help you understand your tinnitus, check your hearing, and guide you towards the right support.

Think you might have tinnitus? Book an appointment with The Sense of Hearing today by calling 01295 557008.

Earwax plays an important role in keeping your ears healthy

Also known as cerumen, earwax is produced by tiny glands in your ear canal. It helps to:
- Trap dust, debris and bacteria
- Keep your ear canal moisturised
- Protect the delicate skin and prevent infection

Most of the time, earwax moves out of the ear naturally, but sometimes, it builds up, leading to:
- Blocked or muffled hearing
- A “full” feeling in the ears
- Tinnitus (ringing sounds)
- Earache or even dizziness

Avoid poking anything into your ears as this can push wax further in or even damage your ear canal.

If you think you might have a wax build-up, the safest option is to see a professional. At The Sense of Hearing, we offer safe and gentle wax removal carried out by Jo, our fully trained specialist.

Did You Know?

Your ears don’t just help you hear — they also help you keep your balance!

Deep inside your inner ear is a tiny, incredible system called the vestibular system. It constantly sends signals to your brain to help you stay upright, steady, and stable as you move.

So if you’ve ever felt dizzy or unsteady, your ears might be playing a bigger role than you think.

Regular hearing checks can also help identify balance related issues. If you're experiencing dizziness or ringing in your ears, we're here to help. Call 01295 557008 to book a FREE appointment.
