What is Reiki?

Reiki (meaning Universal Life and Life Energy) was developed by Mikao Usui and is an alternative medicine based on healing energy. Widely used for stress relief and relaxation, Reiki promotes balance and healing. When a person’s energy has become weak or has a block, it can cause imbalances that may manifest physically or emotionally which could, in turn, lead to illness. Reiki uses healing energy to rebalance the person’s energy which should flow freely and strongly for a healthy body and mind.

A Reiki session with me usually lasts around 50 minutes. You will lay fully clothed on the massage table with relaxing music playing in the background. If lying down is not suitable for you, Reiki can be given in a seated position too. During the session you may experience warmth, deep relaxation or perhaps no particular sensation. Many people feel very relaxed after their session and some people feel energised!

Some of the popular benefits reported by people who have Reiki are:-

Reduction in pain
Reduction in stress and/or anxiety
Increased energy
Improved sleep and restfulness
General feelings of well-being

If you have questions about Reiki or would like any information please send me a message, I would be more than happy to help.

This week I had a new patient in for labour induction. Acupuncture is safe and effective for this, naturally encouraging uterine contractions and well as nourishing a woman's energy ready for labour. Acupuncture for labour induction is appropriate for women that have had an uncomplicated pregnancy, who are in good health with a single baby that is also healthy. Usually acupuncture is sought after 40 weeks and when the hospital is offering an induction. Everyone responds differently and the number of sessions required depends on the individual. In this case one treatment was enough and the baby was born before the second appointment. Congratulations to my patient and her family on the arrival of their baby.

I am an acupuncturist working in a private home clinic in Banbury. Now that my son has begun school I am able to open up some more appointments to help more people. Acupuncture - a complementary/alternative medicine where very fine needles are inserted through the skin at specific points on the body to treat health complaints. Insomnia?

If you are regularly having sleeping problems, you properly have insomnia. Some of the causes of insomnia are:-

Stress, anxiety and depression
Overthinking
Shift work and keeping unusual hours
Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine or recreational drugs
Some prescribed drugs
Discomfort

Some of the common symptoms or presentations of insomnia are:-

Finding it difficult to go to sleep
Waking up several times during the night
Waking in the early hours of the morning and not being able to get back to sleep
Lying awake all night
Feeling tired/irritated and not being able to concentrate during the day

How can acupuncture help with insomnia?

Acupuncture is a holistic treatment which means that it will be tailored to you and how your
insomnia is presenting. It aims to balance the mind and body to restore normal functioning.
In Chinese Medicine this might mean rebalancing the Yin and Yang of the body and
ensuring the free movement of Qi energy. Acupuncture promotes relaxation and increased
blood flow which can improve sleep quality. There has also been research to show that
acupuncture can increase melatonin secretion, reduce the ‘flight or fight’ response and
regulate the levels of some of the neurotransmitters which assist the brain in relaxation
and tension reduction.

How can massage therapy help with Insomnia?

Massage therapy can help with insomnia by encouraging the release of serotonin (the
precursor to melatonin that helps us with sleep). Massage also decreases stress and
anxiety while promoting relaxation, all of which assist the body in a deeper and more
peaceful sleep.
