It's that time of year again when everyone just wants to look out the window as it's so much more entertaining than anything on television. And oh - to have that energy and spring in our steps!

Our Harvest festival service is due to take place next Thursday, so activities have been Harvest themed. These have involved looking, touching, smelling various vegetables, as well as talking about them and making the harvest displays.

The residents have also been bringing the outside inside, playing harvest and autumn themed activities with the magic table. They kicked leaves, picked fruit and painted pictures with their feet. It was good exercise - not just working the legs, but also the lungs thanks to a lot of laughter - and I have been assured that no animals were hurt in the process!

We are continuing with our London theme, which has been a great excuse to bake Chelsea Buns. And, even better, the residents were then able to subsequently enjoy eating them at a London themed coffee morning. The coffee and cakes were accompanied by singing and clapping along to some old cockney songs, and a couple of the residents then taught the staff a bit of cockney rhyming slang - which they found both interesting and entertaining!

The latest activities theme is London, and the residents have been getting very creative. They've made their own miniature London - complete with the Houses of Parliament, The Royal Guard and the familiar old red 'phone boxes - as well as painting other famous London icons.

As summer draws to an end, we're still managing to juggle the activities around the weather and make the most of the sunny days.

We have had a wonderful time recently with the lovely Tristan Pate, who has been able to come to Wardington for a couple of live, albeit socially-distanced, performances. For his first visit the weather was a bit dismal, but Tristan happily sang from the terrace whilst the residents were able to stay warm and comfortable in the sitting room, but still able to join in with their favourite songs.

The following week was even better as the sun shone and we were all able to be outside together. The vagaries of British weather might be keeping us on our toes, but Tristan definitely had them tapping and hands clapping to some lively songs in the sun.

There have been plenty of other indoor activities on the cooler days, with flowers from the garden and seaside themed drawings continuing to keep people busy. We've also been making the most of the good weather and, when the sun has come out, a few people have been able to venture out to the village and explore the local church and allotment.

We have been doing our best to keep summer going at Wardington House, and have continued with our theme of "holidays", particularly those taken by the sea.

The staff brought a little bit of the seaside into the house, with a variety of pebbles and shells from a Dorset beach. The residents enjoyed looking at the shapes, colours and details, as well as feeling the different textures. These also prompted people to use their imaginations, reminding them of other things “that looks like a sharks tooth", and helping them to think creatively "you could make a pretty necklace with that one!”

A number of people were involved in making a poster for the sitting room, which stimulated a lot of chat - both while putting it together and once it was displayed. These reminiscences have ranged from journeys to different beaches and adventures in or on the sea, to foods enjoyed at the seaside (fish and chips may have featured a few times), and favourite flavours of ice cream.

Books and magazines have been carefully left open around the house, showing wonderful photos and pictures. These help to create interest and conversations wherever someone wants to be (not everyone wants to sit in the sitting rooms) and to re-ignite those memories of happy times at the seaside with family and friends.

There are always many opportunities for the residents to colour and paint. Using the current theme of "holidays", every day sees new bright and beautiful paintings and colourings of seaside scenery displayed around the sitting rooms. The artists have also been inspired by the eye-catching flowers around the home.

Some residents enjoyed a mini-bus outing to the picturesque village of Fawsley. Amongst the beautiful scenery of this area of Northamptonshire were the lovely lakes to admire, although the highlight may have been the rural traffic problem of sheep roaming across the road!

Of course, typical British holidays wouldn't be the same without typical British holiday weather. To help lift spirits on those dreary days, Sammy the Seal, Cat and Tiger have all been out for cosy cuddles. As well as being comforting to hold and stroke, these help the residents reminisce about much loved pets, along with many smiles and a lot of laughter.

Old netball and cricket skills have been put to the test with ball catching and throwing in the main sitting room, accompanied by Glenn Miller's music. Not only great fun, it was also good exercise and kept everyone on those toes, including the staff, whether sitting or standing. Sadly there are no photos of this - apparently the staff found a bit hard juggling a ball and the iPad!

Our theme this month has been ‘Summer’, and luckily the residents have had many opportunities to get outside and make the most of the lovely weather.

The gardens continue to change. The carefully planned planting ensures there are always many different colours, textures and aromas to explore and stimulate the senses.

Inside the house, our singing sessions with Tristan Pate (still via Zoom) have now become singing and dancing sessions. The dance floor has been very busy with residents and staff waltzing, twisting and twirling away. The energy and atmosphere have been fantastic, but those watching have been left feeling quite dizzy at times!

Yesterday we celebrated Fathers' Day at Wardington with all the residents. For those fathers with us, the morning was spent opening their cards and presents, and they were all encouraged to chat and tell stories about their children (nothing too scurrilous though!).

The staff made sure everyone had the opportunity during the day to remember the fathers in their lives. To help spark conversations a poster was made and displayed, and books with fatherly photos were carefully left around the sitting rooms.

Did you know - this week is British Flowers Week, celebrating the beauty and variety of British cut flowers, foliage and plants?

Obviously we celebrate flowers all year at Wardington, and the house is always full of fresh cut flowers. But, of course, the gardens are where we truly enjoy all things horticultural. Planting has been planned very carefully over the years, to maximise the residents' enjoyment, with strong colours everywhere which can be fully appreciated from both inside and outside the house.

As smell is one of the most effective senses at evoking memories, the planting schemes also ensure there are strongly scented areas. For both colour and aroma, the rose garden is probably the favourite place outside this month.

As well as admiring the flowers outside, the residents have also been busy inside, with their own botanical painting.

This month our theme is ‘The Great Outdoors’, and happily we now have the weather for us to spend more time outside, and enjoy the gardens and views.

As well as sitting out on the terrace, the residents have also been very busy in the gardens. They got their hands dirty planting out sunflower seeds, and have been visiting the greenhouse to check on the wide variety of plants growing in there. They were also able to teach the staff the various different plant names.

We have a Magic Table in the house at the moment, which is proving to be great entertainment and jolly good exercise. People have been having a lot of fun popping balloons and bubbles; creating ripples in the water and watching the fish swim amongst many other games. After one session a resident described it as leaving her feeling like "I have been to the gymnasium!".
