When I tell clients their skin is dehydrated the most common reply is ‘I probably don’t drink enough water’.
I wish it really was that simple!
So many factors come into play, such as lifestyle, damaging products, poor nutrition, etc. that slapping on a thicker moisturiser and upping water intake just will not solve the underlying cause of poor cellular health and a damaged protection barrier that literally allows water to leave the skin.
Skin dehydration is not a classification in the way that oily, sensitive or lipid dry is, it’s a symptom. For some, it may just be a blip (think central heating, car heaters etc, which can temporarily break down the protection role of skin), but for others it can be a constant feature due to not knowing what it is, or understanding how it feels to be hydrated.
So what can be done?
The easiest start would be to look at your skincare; what you use, how you do it, and how consistent you are. Be mindful that certain salon treatments performed regularly may contribute to dehydration (happy to answer questions regarding treatments and the ones I dislike with my reasons!)
However, we also need to look at stress levels, what you consume, your habits, your usual environment…a full 360 approach.
Think about it, your skin is your largest organ and like every other body organ, it is affected by our lifestyle and choices.
The skin you see has started off at a deeper level and has gone through changes before reaching the surface. Without the best start at the beginning how can it perform its job to the highest standard?
