FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND GRIEF SUPPORT SERIES
Funeral directors do far more than arrange a service, they walk alongside families through some of life’s most difficult moments.
From offering guidance before the funeral to ensuring the day itself runs with care, and continuing support afterwards, their role is centred on compassion and understanding.

It’s about being present, providing reassurance, and helping families honour their loved one in a way that brings comfort and meaning.

If you or someone you know needs the support of a Funeral Director, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are available by
phone 24 hours a day.

WORLD POETRY DAY

Today, on World Poetry Day, we’re reminded of the quiet power words can hold, especially during times of grief.

Poetry often gives shape to feelings that can be hard to express. A few lines, a simple rhythm, or a moment captured on the
page can bring comfort when emotions feel overwhelming. For many people who are grieving, poetry becomes a space to
pause, reflect, and feel understood.

Poetry can also create a powerful moment of connection during a funeral, offering words that gently express feelings many
people struggle to say aloud. Its rhythm and imagery help bring calm, reflection, and a sense of shared understanding.

FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND GRIEF SUPPORT SERIES

How funeral directors provide grief support after the funeral.

Grief doesn’t follow a timetable, and funeral directors know that support is just as important after the service as it is before.
Funeral Directors can be there to listen, advise on local bereavement groups or, when the family feels ready, help with memorial arrangements.

Sometimes it’s the small things like checking in, listening and providing resources that make a difficult time feel a little less
isolating.

Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, and mother‑figures who have filled our lives with love,
guidance, and warmth. Their care shapes families and communities in countless meaningful ways.

As funeral professionals, we see every day how powerful a mother’s influence can be — in the stories families share, the
traditions passed down, and the love that continues long after someone has gone.

Whether you’re spending the day together or reflecting on the memories that make you smile, we hope this day brings a sense
of gratitude and connection.

FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND GRIEF SUPPORT SERIES

How funeral directors provide grief support during the funeral.

On the day of the service, the funeral director’s role is to create a peaceful, respectful environment where families can focus on
what truly matters, saying goodbye to their loved one. Your Funeral Director ensures everything runs smoothly and provides
quiet support and comfort.

The Funeral Director can take a certain route to the church, cemetery, or crematorium or ensure a particular piece of music is played to personalise and support the family.

If you know someone who needs our support, share this post. We’re always ready to talk to anyone who might need some
guidance.

FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND GRIEF SUPPORT SERIES

This month we are exploring how funeral directors provide grief support to families.

In the early days after someone dies, grief can make even simple tasks feel heavy. Funeral directors walk alongside families with
compassion, offering reassurance, space to breathe, and help with the arrangements when it’s hard to think clearly.

Our team are available to offer guidance 24/7. Please get in touch if you are looking for guidance and a helping hand.

Our Funeral Manager, Barbara Wilson, recently attended an event at Custom House highlighting the incredible work of Little Heroes, the charity supporting the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
Hearing from consultant paediatricians, hospital staff and parents was both uplifting and emotional, as they shared the daily challenges they face and the vital support Little Heroes provides to children and their families.
One particularly touching story was about a little girl who had been in hospital since birth and was just starting to toddle. She needed her first pair of shoes but had never left the hospital. Little Heroes arranged for Clarkes to visit, measure her feet and provide shoes — a simple gesture that meant so much to her family.
We are very proud to support such a fantastic charity. 💙

MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS SERIES 4/4

Tone of voice

If you are struggling with writing your message, it may help to think about the voice of the person speaking it. You could use a favourite quote or saying your loved one used.

You could also write the message as though it is being spoken by a family member or a close friend, remembering your loved one.

If you are still struggling to choose the correct words for a headstone inscription you can ask your local Funeral Director for guidance. Our knowledgeable team can help guide you on pricing, designs and any restrictions, of the local church or burial site as well as offer advice on the perfect tribute for your loved one. Send us a message today or find more information about memorial masonry at: johngrayfuneraldirectors.com/services/memorial-masonry/
