Our next Childrens Movement clinic in partnership with Foot Clinic NI will take place on Friday 27th March.

This clinic is ideal if you’ve ever had concerns about your child

• Toe walking
• Foot position - eg flat feet, feet turning out / in
• Expericencing foot and ankle pain / growing pains

Our podiatrists are experts in feet which provide the foundation for the body and our physiotherapist will assess higher up the body to see how the feet are affecting how the body moves.

This is a great opportunity to have both a paediatric physio and podiatrist assess your child together and give clear, practical advice.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or contact Foot Clinic NI to book an appointment.

This article was written by a parent who used TMR as a treatment technique for her baby with torticollis.

It explains the technique and why it works.

If you would like a different way to help your baby with torticollis or tightness then get in touch. I don’t do any stretching or pulling on right muscles so babies aren’t sore.

I use TMR to get length and release tight muscles and honestly it’s like magic! You will see immediate results.

Have a read of one parents experience in this article.

✨ Why milestones matter

Babies have an innate desire to climb. Climbing produces forces on the bones in the leg and helps develop the hip joints.

So when your baby wants to climb up the stairs, onto the sofa, up the slide (😱 shocking I know) let them do it. Just teach them how to get down safely. 🙂

✨Why milestones matter

Crawling…a foundational movement which builds so many skills in babies. Again somehow it has become controversial 🤷‍♀️

Not only does crawling build strength it gives a baby independence and sets them up for pulling up to stand.

Crawling also helps integrate both sides of the brain working together, it is really great for visual tracking and scanning and bilateral coordination.

Finally research has proven that crawling has been linked with reading, writing, sequencing, focus and self regulation.

I’ll post some activities which can help prepare for crawling later this week.

😬 Like rolling - crawling has somehow become controversial 🤷‍♀️.

But did you know crawling has been linked with literacy and crawling builds shoulder strength and stability needed for handwriting?

Crawling builds pathways in the brain and strength in the body that children need for later in life.

And yes maybe some children never crawled and they are ‘fine’ but it still is always best to follow a typical pattern of development.

Check back later this week for some activities to help your baby with crawling.

✨ Why milestones matter

Protective reactions are when babies put their hand out to save themselves from falling over.

A skill we need for life 🙂

When they are learning to walk, run, jump, climb, hop and leap they will fall many many times and they need to know how to it their hands out to save them.

Learning to sit is when they first develop that skill.

🌀 ROLLING

Here are a couple of ways to play with your baby to encourage rolling

1️⃣ Baby plank - When first doing this give baby lots of support ie have your legs at babies chest level. As they get stronger encourage them to reach for a toy - that will belp get weight through one arm they need to push to roll over from belly to back

2️⃣ The tip over game - Gives babies a great way to use their tummy muscles which they need to lift those legs up to roll over from back to belly. It also provides lovely connection between mum and baby.

‐----‐---------------------------------------------------------------

Most babies will roll between 4 -7 months and dont need to 'exercise' to get there. These activies are helpful if your baby is not showing signs of rolling within that time frame.

✨ Why milestones matter.

Rolling has somehow become controversial 🤷‍♀️.

Let me say this ALL babies should learn to roll and they should learn to roll from back to tummy and tummy to back AND to the right and the left.

Crossing midline is an important skill which is foundational for body awareness and helps both sides of the brain to communicate together. We need that skill for reading, writing, balance, coordination and a lot more.

Give your baby lots and lot of floor time so they have the opportunity to explore their environment and roll over.

After preparing for over a year - completing my return to practice hours, doing course after course, figuring out all the logistics and stepping outside of the box I started Movement and Milestones.

🤷‍♀️I had no idea how it was going to go and I had no idea if people would even know why kids need physio - after all private physio with kids is not the done thing here in Northern Ireland. But I did know that I had the knowledge, skills and training to help them.

😬So I launched my website, promoted on social media and saw my first patient TWO years ago.

🤩It's been brilliant and I have loved it (except the admin - I do not like that at all!)

💙 Thank you for entrusting me with your child, for following my advice, for sharing my details and for following along on social media.

Hoping to keep growing over the next two!

Tummy time alternatives

1️⃣ Tummy time on mum or dads chest - a lovely way to do tummy time as babies love to look at faces. Bend elbows in under shoulders and support the shoulders.

2️⃣ Carry baby over your arm - I love this one because you dont have to take extra time out of your already busy day! And baby can lie their head down on your arm when they get tired.

3️⃣ Once babies are 6m they want to be up and playong at a vertical surface is a great way to do 'tummy time.' I love using a baby walker or an activity table inclined up against the sofa.

⤵️Let me know in the comments if you have tried any of these
