We currently have five HCEC PhD students based at the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME), Bangor University. Two of our students, who are near completion, are supervised by our co-directors, Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards and Professor Deb Fitzsimmons. These projects have investigated public engagement as a tool of co-production and NHS medical workforce shortages. Three projects, supervised by Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards, are being undertaken by staff candidates at CHEME. These projects are investigating elective surgery waiting lists in Wales and Australia, epiretinal membrane disease and the intersectionality of exercise spaces and uptake in Wales. Let us know if you would like to learn more about our PhD students and their projects.

We are delighted that Dr Ceryl Davies joined HCEC in 2023 to lead our social care economics work. Ceryl brings 25 years of experience in Law, Social Work and Social Policy, with broad inter-disciplinary training in Social Work matters, research skills and leadership competencies. Ceryl has recently been awarded a 5-year HCRW-NIHR Advanced Research Fellowship to pursue her research in Social Care Economics and measure the impact of enhancing cervical screening care for women who have experienced sexual violence and abuse across Wales, England and Australia. This research is led from CHEME in Bangor in partnership with Swansea, York, Bristol and Monash Universities. This is also a partnership with key organisations, including Cervical Screening Wales, the MyBodyBack Clinic London, Welsh Women’s Aid, Survivors Trust and BAWSO.

HCEC is committed to building capacity and capability in methodological and applied health economics research. We encourage our researchers to undertake additional training, gain experience and develop skills. In September, two of our promising researchers, Pim Doungsong and Rachel Granger, completed the short course on Discrete Choice Experiments (DCEs) with the Health Economics Research Unit at the University of Aberdeen. DCEs can help us determine what characteristics of a health care service people value. DCEs can be used to assess patient preferences for diagnostic services, clinic configurations or different routes of administration for medicines.

A new Oxford University Press book edited by Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards and Dr Catherine Lawrence and co-authored by many past and present members of the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME) takes a life-course perspective, from conception to death, to explore the health economics of well-being and well-becoming.

Health Economics of Well-being and Well-becoming across the Life-course follows a life-course model with chapters aligned to pregnancy and early years, adolescence, working age, and older age phases of life. It enables the reader to think about older age in a different way and asks them to consider where we should be investing in cost-effective interventions to support the prevention of chronic disease, disability, and premature death later in life.

This book is for health economists, public health and health system researchers, students of health economics, medicine and public health, as well as local and national policymakers.
