Exploring the Benefits of Manual Therapy and DNIC!

Did you know that manual therapy can help trigger the body's natural pain relief mechanisms, known as Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control (DNIC)?

The mechanisms of DNIC:

Nociceptive Inhibition: When a painful stimulus is applied, it activates the pain receptors in the affected area. These pain receptors send signals to the spinal cord and brainstem.

The brainstem processes these signals and sends instructions back down the spinal cord to reduce pain signals from other areas.

Pain Modulation: This generally reduces the feeling of pain because the inhibitory signals weaken the pain signals from other parts of the body.

Deep Tissue Massage: Applying firm pressure and deep strokes can create a painful stimulus that activates DNIC, reducing pain perception in other areas.

Stimulation of Mechanoreceptors:
Joint Mobilisation: Moving joints can stimulate mechanoreceptors, which helps activate DNIC, reducing pain and improving mobility.

Manipulation: Quick, small thrusts used in manipulative techniques can activate DNIC pathways, providing rapid pain relief for some people.

Stop worrying about your posture so much.

There are certain occasions where posture could be a relevant factor in pain. But it is often only a small factor, and there are much bigger fish to fry with chronic back pain.

When I ask people about their goals, they usually reply with "Be in less pain."

This is fine. But pain is going to fluctuate throughout your rehab process, so it's important to have other goals that can keep you motivated during pain flare-ups.

Runners knee ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€โžก๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธโ€โžก๏ธ

Today, we're covering the basics of what runners' knee is, it's causes and what you can do about it.

Up to 4 times, your bodyweight can go through your knees during running. It's no wonder that people who suddenly start or get back to running without any periodisation or thought of recovery get knee pain.

If you would like to be taken through a strengthening and return to running program, consider booking in through the website.

Progressive overload is a strength training principle that is done well in the strength and conditioning world. But it can sometimes be lacking in injury rehabilitation.

In order to keep progressing with your exercises, you have to challenge your body to work harder.

How I like to do this is give a rep range, i.e., 8-20 reps. Gradually, work your way up, and once you get to 20 reps, increase the weight/resistance or increase the difficulty of the movement.
