Sometimes memory changes are more than just “a sign of getting older”.

Forgetting recent conversations, misplacing everyday items, struggling to recognise familiar places, or feeling unusually confused can all be early signs of dementia.

It can feel worrying, but seeking help early makes a big difference.

Doctors encourage anyone noticing changes to make an appointment as soon as possible. An early diagnosis brings peace of mind, helps explain what’s happening, and opens the door to support, guidance, and practical steps that can make life easier.

At Guardian Angel Carers Banstead, we’re here to help you take those first steps with confidence and compassion. 💜

Whether it’s understanding what support is available, or helping loved ones feel safe at home, you don’t have to face it alone.

Dementia is one of the fastest-growing health challenges in the world. As our population ages, the number of people living with dementia is projected to rise sharply, reaching 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050.

Behind these numbers are individuals, families, and communities whose lives are changed every day.

Early advice and diagnosis can make a big difference – it means better planning, access to treatment options, emotional support, and practical care when it’s needed most.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, we’re encouraging more open conversations about dementia. Because understanding the condition and seeking help early can truly change lives.

5 Simple Ways to Support Someone Living With Dementia 💜

1. Create a calm environment
Loud noises, clutter and too many changes can feel overwhelming. Keeping spaces calm, familiar and filled with comforting items can make daily life more peaceful.

2. Use clear, simple language
Short sentences, a gentle tone and friendly gestures can make conversations easier to follow and less stressful for everyone.

3. Keep a routine
Predictable schedules bring comfort and reduce confusion. Regular mealtimes, daily walks, or even a favourite TV show at the same time each day can create a reassuring rhythm.

4. Engage with meaningful activities
Music, family photos, and well-loved hobbies can trigger happy memories and provide moments of connection and joy.

5. Be patient and kind
Above all, a calm, reassuring presence helps ease frustration and anxiety. Sometimes, kindness and patience say more than words ever could.

This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s work together to make life a little easier and brighter for people living with dementia and their families.

☀️ Hot Weather Safety for Older Adults

Hot weather can be dangerous, especially for older adults and those with health conditions. As we age, our bodies adjust less effectively to temperature changes and some medications can make it harder to stay cool.

Watch out for heat-related illnesses:
Heat exhaustion & heat stroke - look for dizziness, nausea, confusion, fainting, or hot, dry skin.
Heat cramps & swelling - drink water and rest in a cool place if these happen.
Heat rash or sunburn – keep skin cool and dry, and protect it with sunscreen (SPF 15+) and light clothing.

Key tips to stay safe:
Drink plenty of fluids - prefer water, juice, or electrolyte drinks; avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Keep your home cool - close curtains in the day, open windows at night, and limit oven use.
If possible, spend time in air - conditioned spaces during peak heat, like shopping centres or libraries.
Dress for the heat - wear light, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
Plan outdoor activities for mornings or evenings and use sunscreen, sunglasses, and shade.
Know your medications - ask your doctor if they increase your risk of overheating.

Remember: headache, confusion, dizziness, or nausea can be early signs of heat-related illness. Move to a cool place, rest, and seek medical help if symptoms don’t ease.
A safe summer means more time enjoying what matters most. 💜
