Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honour all those in the trans community that we have lost too soon.
Trans Day of Remembrance was founded 25 years ago in 1999, when trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith organised a vigil to honour Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.
The vigil commemorated the one-year anniversary of Hesterβs death, and all the trans people lost to violence that year. Every year since, communities across the world have observed Trans Day of Remembrance by coming together at vigils to share their grief and outrage together.
We know that today will be a difficult day for many of you. Know that you are not alone, and we are thinking of you.
