Myths About Anxiety You Need to Stop Believing

If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety, you’ll know how frustrating it is to hear advice that feels dismissive or oversimplified.

The truth is that these myths are everywhere and believing them can keep you stuck feeling like nothing will change. Let’s clear them up together so you can see what’s really going on.

❌ Myth 1: “You just need to calm down.”
If only it were that simple.
Anxiety isn’t a faulty volume k**b you can twist down when it gets too loud. It’s your body’s alarm system, and alarms don’t shut up until you deal with what triggered them.
✅ Truth: Real change starts when you learn how to listen to your nervous system and give it the tools to reset, not when you’re told to “chill.”

❌ Myth 2: “If you ignore it, it’ll go away.”
That’s like ignoring a smoke alarm and hoping the fire puts itself out.
Anxiety doesn’t magically leave just because you avoid it, in fact, it often gets louder to grab your attention.
✅ Truth: The sooner you learn ways to process and respond differently, the less power it has over you. It’s not about ignoring, it’s about upgrading your coping strategy.

❌ Myth 3: “It’s just who I am.”
Nope. Not true. Not even a little bit.
Anxiety is something you experience, not who you are. It’s not your personality, it’s not your destiny, and it’s definitely not a life sentence.
✅ Truth: With the right support, your brain can be re-trained. Your responses can be rewired. You can absolutely live lighter, calmer, and more in control, without having to move to a cabin in the woods or become a zen master.

Bottom line? Anxiety isn’t a flaw in your character, it’s a signal that something needs attention. That’s where I come in.

I help women in midlife learn how to respond to anxiety in ways that actually work, so they can stop feeling hijacked by it and start feeling in control again.

📅 Book your Serene Mind Reset today and let’s get your nervous system back on your side.

About Me | A Little Re-Introduction 💚

If you’re new here, or you’ve been quietly following along for a while… hello, I’m Wendy.

I support women, particularly in midlife, who look “fine” on the outside but inside feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally drained, stuck, or simply not quite themselves anymore.

The women I work with are often the ones holding everything together for everyone else, whilst quietly losing themselves in the process.

The work I offer is alternative, effective, and focused on helping you create real emotional shifts without needing years of traditional talking therapy.

I use a blend of approaches including IEMT, NLP, Metaphors of Movement, EFT Tapping, OldPain2Go® and Reiki, depending on what you need as an individual.

These techniques work with both the mind and body, helping clients:
✨ feel calmer and less overwhelmed
✨ reduce anxiety and overthinking
✨ build confidence and self-belief
✨ let go of old emotional patterns and triggers
✨ feel lighter, clearer and more emotionally balanced
✨ reconnect with themselves again

Alongside one to one sessions, I also offer Reiki and Laughter Yoga for women wanting more calm, connection, energy and lightness in their lives.

Sessions take place online via Zoom or in person at The Serenity Studio in Barnard Castle, creating a safe and supportive space where you don’t need to have all the answers or hold everything together.

If something in you knows it’s time for things to feel different, this is your reminder that support is available.

Have a look at the website, or message me if you’d like to know more about how I can support you.

How do I facilitate change?

I often get asked, what do I do in alternative therapy sessions. The answer really depends on what the individual client needs, as every session is tailored to the individual.

I have created a ‘toolkit’ of modalities (or techniques if you prefer), that I can access to support clients during each session. One of my go-to techniques is IEMT – Integral Eye Movement Technique.

Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) is a cutting-edge approach rooted in neurology, psychology, and cognitive science principles. IEMT provides an innovative framework for addressing various emotional and behavioural challenges by focusing on the intricate interplay between eye movements and memory recall.

IEMT offers a structured method for exploring how memories and emotions are encoded in the mind. This technique uses precise eye movement patterns to recalibrate maladaptive responses, allowing individuals to process distressing memories, alleviate negative emotions, and develop healthier mental frameworks.

Clients often describe feeling lighter after just one session, like something has finally shifted.

You might notice you:
– Respond differently to things that used to feel overwhelming
– Feel more balanced and emotionally grounded
– Step into a version of yourself that feels aligned, capable, and calm

This is a powerful transformational technique that can impact even after one session. I am certified as an Advanced Practitioner of IEMT, and a member of The Association for IEMT Practitioners.

If you’re ready to feel less triggered, more grounded, and more like yourself again... this might be the approach you’ve been looking for.

You get to choose the energy you take into next week.

If last week felt a bit much, it’s often down to where your boundaries slipped.

Saying yes when you didn’t really want to or letting your time get filled up before you’ve even checked in with yourself.

That doesn’t just stay in last week, it follows you into the next one.

You don’t need to overhaul everything.

Just start here...Pause before you answer, give yourself a moment to decide what actually works for you.

A clear yes feels different to a pressured one.

That’s one way to protect your time, your energy, and your headspace going into the week ahead.

It’s raining here today, but to be fair the garden needed it 🌧️

So whatever your plans are this weekend… whether you’re out and about, catching up with people, working, resting or just pottering around at home like me, I hope you enjoy it.

Sometimes the slower weekends are the best ones.

Enjoy whatever your plans.

Your mind is trying to protect you… it’s just overdoing it

Phobias aren’t about logic. You can know you’re safe and still feel the reaction.

Flying, spiders, driving, the dentist… your body kicks in before you’ve had chance to think.

That’s a learned response, and it can change.
In sessions, I help reduce that reaction so it no longer feels overwhelming.

What used to trigger you starts to feel manageable, sometimes even neutral.

If there’s something you’ve been avoiding because of how it makes you feel, it doesn’t have to stay that way.

If this is something you want to move past, send me a message and we’ll take it from there.

That voice that says “who do I think I am?” or “they’ll find me out” tends to show up at the exact moment things could move forward.

It’s not about your ability. It’s just your mind going back to what it knows, even if that means holding you back. So you hesitate, you overthink and you pull back just when you could step in.

That’s often the point where things are about to work out.

In sessions, we change that response so you’re not holding yourself back in those moments. You start to trust what you’re doing and follow things through without that constant doubt creeping in.

You notice it in how you show up. You speak more freely. You let things go well instead of expecting them to fall apart.

If this feels familiar, message me and we’ll talk through how I can help.

Wendy

“Who says you have to believe that?”

Seriously… who says you’re too old to start over? Who says you’re not confident, capable, or ready? Who says it’s too late, or that this is just how things are now?

Most of the things you believe about yourself aren’t facts. They’re patterns your mind has learned over time.

When those patterns are running in the background, they don’t just sit quietly… they affect the decisions you make, and how much you hold yourself back.

That’s why simply telling yourself to “think differently” rarely works.

In the Serene Mind Reset, we work with those beliefs at the level they were created, using approaches like NLP and IEMT. So instead of going over the same thoughts again and again, we actually change how your mind responds to them.

When that shifts, things start to feel easier. You feel more confident in your decisions, less held back, and more like yourself again without forcing it.

So when that old thought pops up, try asking… “who says I have to believe this?”

If you’re ready to change the answer for good, come and have a conversation with me about how this work could support you.

👇 What’s one belief you’re starting to question?

“Every time an exam approached, I’d be overwhelmed with anxiety for weeks before. After just one session with Wendy, everything changed. Now, I’m back to my studies feeling calm, focused, and free from exam stress.” – Holly

This is something I hear more often than you might think, where the anxiety doesn’t just show up on the day but starts weeks before, building in the background, taking up headspace, affecting sleep, focus, and confidence long before anything has even happened.

It’s not just about the exam itself at that point, it’s the impact it has on how you feel day to day and how much energy it takes just trying to manage it.

What we worked on here wasn’t about coping strategies or pushing through it, it was about changing the way that response was happening so it didn’t keep repeating in the same way.

For Holly, that meant being able to go back to her studies without that constant build-up of stress, feeling calmer, more focused, and no longer stuck in that cycle beforehand.

If this is something you recognise in yourself, whether it’s exams or anything else that brings that same feeling, it’s something that can change.

If you’re wondering whether this could help you, just drop me a message.

Wendy

What would actually change if you trusted yourself more?

For a lot of the women I work with, it’s not about ability as they already know what they’re doing.

It’s the second guessing that gets in the way. Going over decisions again and again, holding back in conversations, or sometimes questioning yourself even when you already had the answer.

That’s what keeps things feeling stuck.
This isn’t something that shifts just by telling yourself to be more confident.

In the Serene Mind Reset, we work with what’s driving that response underneath, using approaches such as NLP and IEMT. Instead of trying to push through it, you begin to feel more certain in yourself.

That’s when things start to change. Decisions feel easier. You trust what you’re doing without needing constant reassurance.

If you know this is the bit that’s been holding you back, send me a message and we’ll look at whether the Serene Mind Reset is right for you.
