This workbook is grounded in my hands-on experience of working closely with children and parents who often struggle to understand their childโs needs through a neurodivergent lens.
I have seen first-hand how neurodivergent children are frequently misunderstood. Behaviours that are perceived as defiance, laziness, or poor behaviour are often rooted in sensory overload, communication difficulties, anxiety, or unmet needs. When parents are not given the tools or language to understand these differences, it can lead to frustration on both sides and strain the parentโchild relationship.
Equally, I have witnessed the powerful shift that occurs when parents begin to view their child through a neurodivergent lens. Understanding how a childโs brain processes information differently allows parents to respond with empathy rather than correction, curiosity rather than punishment, and support rather than expectation.
I have developed this workbook to bridge the gap between professional knowledge and everyday family life. It reflects real experiences, real challenges, and real conversations with parents who want to do their best for their child but may not yet understand how. The strategies and reflections included are practical, compassionate, and achievable, recognising that every child and every family is unique.
Above all, this workbook aims to empower parents. By increasing awareness of neurodivergence and offering a new way of interpreting behaviour, parents can feel more confident in meeting their childโs needs, advocating within school settings, and building stronger, more connected relationships at home.
