This week, we had a new teacher in the class.
She may only be 5, but obviously must watch a lot of the pilates I teach at home and in the classes.
Loving her arm openings!
The benefits of arm openings are…
1. Thoracic Spine Mobility
• Promotes rotation and flexibility in the upper and middle back (thoracic spine), which is crucial for good posture and injury prevention.
2. Shoulder Mobility and Stability
• Encourages smooth, controlled shoulder movement while improving joint stability, especially around the scapula.
3. Postural Awareness
• Opens up the chest and counters the effects of hunching or slouching (especially from sitting at a desk or using screens).
4. Core Engagement
• Requires gentle activation of the deep abdominal muscles to stabilize the pelvis and spine during the movement.
5. Breath Expansion
• Coordinates movement with breath, encouraging ribcage expansion and better lung function.
6. Mind-Body Connection
• Slow and intentional, arm openings promote mindfulness and proprioception (awareness of body position and movement).
