A little bit about ‘Karen the physio’

I always wanted to be a physiotherapist, it sounded like a good mix of all things medical and sport, two things that interested me then and fortunately still do today.

I attended Pinderfields College of Physiotherapy and qualified in July 1991. I started my career at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and then moved for a promotion to Barnsley Hospital. In 1993 I qualified as an Acupuncture practitioner and have been using acupuncture with my practice ever since. I only did the course because I thought acupuncture sounded a bit fancy, the first time I used it on a patient it actually worked.... I couldn’t believe it!

I began my career treating mainly musculo-skeletal conditions and sports injuries in the NHS, private practice and as the first team physiotherapist with a professional rugby league club.

Following a life changing event in 1996 I became interested in oncology and palliative care and went on to become the first physiotherapist to gain a first class honours degree in Oncology and Palliative Care in 2000. I started working at Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Marys Hospital for Womens Health managing a variety of long term and life limiting conditions.

In 2001 I was trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and was able to build up experience managing both primary and secondary lymphoedemas within a NHS multi disciplinary team.

In 2004 I landed my dream job working for the NHS in Barnsley, I am still very happy working in that role today.

I have been a university lecturer at Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield Hallam Universities and continue to teach students within my practice and lecture to professional colleagues.

I belong to the Chartered Society Of Physiotherapy and the Health and Care Professions Council.

As a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists I am required to maintain a very high level of competency in acupuncture. I regularly complete continued professional developement with accredited tutors to ensure safe and effective treatments. I am now able to choose acupuncture courses on subjects that interest me and so last year I completed the Auricular (ear) acupuncture course and now regularly use both needles and ear seeds to affectively stimulate these useful points.

Having developed a few lines and wrinkles over the years I decided to pursue a more natural treatment to botox and completed the Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture course. This is a completely natural anti-aging treatment to improve internal balance and skin vitality. By stimulating acupuncture points on the face and body you can expect a reduction in lines and wrinkles and other benefits such as improved sleep and a feeling of wellbeing.

My passion is holistic care, combining the benefits of physiotherapy with acupuncture and small lifestyle adjustments to enhance health and wellbeing. I treat a variety of conditions including pain.

Pain is very complex and can take many different physical and emotional forms. Acupuncture has been used for 2000 years as a natural way of stimulating the body to produce its own endorphins and other pain relieving and sleep enhancing chemicals. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the body to a state of physical and mental balance by influencing energy known as Qi. This balance promotes the bodys own healing process and encourages a sense of wellbeing and vitality.

I will take time to listen to your concerns and formulate a treatment plan that you are completely happy with. All treatments are individualised as afterall we are all individuals
