๐ŸŒŸ Meet Sophie โ€“ Play Leader at Barnsley Hospital ๐ŸŒŸ

Hi, Iโ€™m Sophie, and Iโ€™ve been a Play Leader at Barnsley for nearly 2 years.
Thereโ€™s something truly special about helping to turn a scary hospital experience into a positive one through something every child lovesโ€ฆ PLAY!

Play isnโ€™t just fun โ€“ it helps children feel safe, relaxed, and better understand whatโ€™s happening around them. I love supporting children and families by bringing a bit of normality during what can be a worrying time. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’ฌ A few fun facts about me:
๐Ÿฆ’ Favourite animal: Giraffe
๐Ÿ’ƒ Hidden talent: I can tap dance!
๐Ÿฆธโ™€๏ธ If I could have a superpower: Iโ€™d want to fly โ€“ so I could visit lots of places and get everywhere fast!

Thanks for getting to know me โ€“ Iโ€™m proud to be part of the Play Team supporting children and families at Barnsley Hospital.

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Lorraine โ€“ Play Leader at Barnsley Hospital ๐ŸŒŸ

Hi, Iโ€™m Lorraine. I qualified as a nursery nurse many years ago, and my career has taken me in a few different directions since then. But for almost 19 years, Iโ€™ve been proud to work as a Hospital Play Leader here at Barnsley Hospital.

This job is incredibly varied โ€“ fun at times, unpredictable at others โ€“ and no two days are ever the same (but thatโ€™s kids for you! ๐Ÿ˜Š).

To a child or young person, the hospital can feel like a scary place. A big part of our role is to help make their experience a positive one. Through play, distraction, and communication at their level of understanding, we help children make sense of whatโ€™s happening around them.

Supporting children and young people through their hospital journey โ€“ and seeing things through their eyes โ€“ is what makes this job so worthwhile. ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’ฌ A few fun facts about me:
๐Ÿ What would I take to a desert island? A big boat!
๐Ÿ› Favourite food: Thai food! (Visiting Thailand is high on my wish list!)
โœˆ๏ธ Hobbies: Family โ€“ first, last, and always. I also love to travel and explore new places.

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me โ€“ Iโ€™m honoured to be part of the team supporting children and families at Barnsley Hospital.

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Liv โ€“ Play Leader at Barnsley Hospital ๐ŸŒŸ

Hi, Iโ€™m Liv, and Iโ€™m one of the Play Leaders here at Barnsley Hospital. Iโ€™ve been in this role for almost 3 years now, and I honestly couldnโ€™t be happier!

I absolutely adore my job โ€“ itโ€™s incredibly rewarding. My favourite part of being a Play Leader is supporting children through their hospital journey and making sure itโ€™s as positive, fun, and comforting as possible.

It means a lot when a child remembers me from a previous visit โ€“ being that gentle, friendly face that helps ease their worries is so special. Whether itโ€™s with a bit of kindness, play, or distraction, I do my best to sprinkle a little magic every day.

From painting rainbows, doing Elsa plaits, to hosting pretend tea parties with dinosaurs, I try to fill every hospital stay with laughter, imagination, and plenty of smiles. ๐Ÿ’›โœจ

๐Ÿ’ฌ A few fun facts about me:
๐Ÿง What animal would I be? A penguin โ€“ because Iโ€™m bubbly, playful, and donโ€™t stop talking!
๐Ÿ’ฐ If I won the lottery? Iโ€™d help my family, buy a big house, get 4 sausage dogs, and open a zoo!

Thanks for reading and getting to know a little bit about me โ€“ Iโ€™m so proud to be part of the amazing Play Team here at Barnsley!

Last night, Barnsley Hospital lit up blue and pink as part of the marking the end of (9-15 October), as we joined the Global Wave of Light โ€” a powerful moment of unity and remembrance.

The week is a time to remember and honour all the precious babies who have died too soon. It brings together families, friends, and healthcare professionals across the world to reflect, raise awareness, and help break the silence surrounding pregnancy and baby loss.

For many families, this week holds deep emotional significance. It is a time to pause, to say their babyโ€™s name, to share their story, and to know that they are not alone. Each ribbon tied, each candle lit, and each act of remembrance carries love, grief, and the unbreakable bond between parents and their babies. A visible reminder that their baby is remembered not only by them, but by a worldwide community that understands their loss and a moment where hearts join together in shared remembrance, lighting the darkness with love. At Barnsley Hospital we honour their strength, acknowledge their grief, and celebrate the lasting impact of every precious life, no matter how brief.
