💬 When clients come to me for scar therapy, they often say no one gave them any advice on how to care for their scar. You’re not alone if you feel unsure. Scar therapy bridges that gap, offering support, relief, and often a sense of being heard.
Scar massage can help soften tight tissue, improve mobility, and support emotional healing.
✨Here’s a few tips on how to start safely at home
💖Wait until its ready
Only massage your scar once its fully healed. Make sure all the scabs have gone, there are no signs of oozing, weeping, or infection. This varies from each person but usually around 6-8 weeks. If you are unsure, ask a professional first.
💖Keep it simple
Use clean hands and small amount of lotion or oil.
If you don’t feel comfortable touching your scar, you can work over clothing. Start above or below, moving towards the scar. Gently move the skin in small circles, side to side, up and down to soften and stretch the scar and underlying tissues.
💖Be consistent, not forceful
Spend around 3-5 minutes, ideally twice daily. Scar tissue responds best to regular, gentle massage.
💖Keep an eye out for changes
It is normal to feel tenderness or mild sensitivity. Do not cause pain or increase inflammation by massaging too hard on your new scar, because this could actually increase scar tissue production.
💖Many scars have reduced sensation
It is very important to keep checking your scar for changes during massage to make sure there is no tissue breakdown. Just because you might not be able to feel what you are doing, does not mean that the scar is not changing.
