- Acupuncture Soft tissue refers to the tissue that connects, supports and surrounds other structures and organs of the body including muscle, tendons, ligament, fascia and nerves. Soft tissue therapy involves the assessment and manipulation of soft tissue. Every
treatment is different and specific to your individual needs. We discuss your reason for seeking treatment and what you want to achieve from your treatment. In response to this I will use the most appropriate techniques to meet your needs. This may include massage techniques, guided muscle contractions to improve joint motion, assisted stretching to release tension and applying pressure to areas of intense tension and restriction. The need for soft tissue therapy can arise due to activity you engage in or a specific condition. You may seek treatment due to discomfort you experience due to your occupation, hobby or sport and the treatment plan will be influenced by your treatment goals.

Running groups and forums are starting to get inundated with questions from people 3 weeks out from London or other spring marathons around what they have or haven’t done and what’s left to do.
For most people following a traditional plan, they’ll be about to start a taper with their last long run potentially this weekend or next weekend.
Here’s some thoughts about the last month pre race.
The dates may be different, but the same rules apply.
It’s much easier to get it wrong than right at this point if you don’t trust the process.

I've seen lots of clients with back pain this week. Often clients report that they ask their partners to give them a back massage but it doesn't quite hit the spot - Maybe try this self-care tip instead 😂

I've had a busy week at the gym, and I experienced some back pain whilst working out and running. Back pain can be a worry but this fact offers reassurance our backs are often stronger than we think.

The training provider I trained with, Restore Scar Therapy are delivering a course at Scunthorpe Hospital on Sunday 2nd February 2024. As part of the training free scar treatments are provided by the trainees under the direction of the tutor.
If you have a scar that you would like to have treated for free and are available on this date, you can book via the website above or let me know and I'll pass your details on to the tutor.
I understand they can work on various types of scars but have a particular interest in c-sections.

I recently worked with a client who had had a knee replacement.
Background
Previous keyhole surgeries -Arthroscopy to remove damaged cartilage. Over time pain due to Osteoarthritis was getting worse and walking (a frequent hobby) for over an hour was too much. This led to partial knee replacement.
Initial assessment
Range of motion was good - ability to bend the knee and squat without pain was very good. The client was not too worried about the appearance of the scar their concern was the swelling and how it felt - tight like an elastic band around the knee.
Treatment
Hands on treatment involved pumping techniques to improve lymphatic flow and address swelling. Lifting techniques were used to encourage tissue to move in areas it appeared tight and stuck. Specific stretching was also used to help with the reduce the tightness.
Home-care
I shared with the client the techniques to use at home to aid with the swelling
Results
It was lovely to hear that following the treatments the client was building their walking distances back up and the tight feeling around the knee had reduced.

Hi I’m Alison a soft tissue therapist who focuses on listening to you. Along with observations of your movement and palpation (use of touch to assess muscles and soft tissue) I identify the possible causes of your discomfort and develop a personalised treatment plan. Many of my clients seek treatment to alleviate soft tissue discomfort caused by their occupation, hobbies and the general stresses and strains of life.
Unlike many soft tissue therapists, I am not from a sporting background. It was in fact my role as a headteacher; a rewarding yet stressful sedentary role that sparked my interest in massage. I had regular massage treatments to ease the tension that frequently built up in my shoulders. I was concerned about my health I was overweight, tired, inactive and generally not feeling well. I needed change!!
Initially my interest in massage developed as a hobby, massaging my friends and family which improved both my own and their wellbeing. This hobby quickly turned into a new career. In 2017 I set up Rejuvenate Therapeutic Massage I delivered a range of massage treatments from a room in my home.
I thrived facing a new challenge and learning new things. I trained as a soft tissue therapist which enabled me to deepen my understanding of the human body in particular soft tissue and the many issues and problems that can arise due to injury, posture, illness and strain.
Alongside this career change other changes also took place. My love for food remains however my relationship with food is much better and I have developed a love for the gym. I attend regular classes including weight training which I never thought possible.
I am passionate about sharing the benefits of soft tissue therapy. We all have soft tissue, 70% of our body is soft tissue so we all have it and we can all benefit from soft tissue treatments. Most importantly I enjoy helping others to enjoy an active and healthy life through soft tissue treatments.
Establishing Alison Aherne soft tissue therapy is by far the best and scariest thing I have ever done. I enjoy sharing the satisfaction my clients feel when we revisit their initial goals and assessments and celebrate progress. Some of my clients have kindly shared these as testimonials on this website. If this resonates with you, please get in touch.
