🤧 Cold vs Flu: What’s the Difference? 🤒

Symptoms can overlap, but colds and flu usually feel very different. Here’s a simple guide to help you tell them apart:

🟦 Cold Symptoms

Sneezing

Runny or blocked nose

Sore throat

Mild cough

Mild tiredness

Low or no fever

Colds usually come on gradually and are generally milder.

🟧 Flu Symptoms

Sudden high temperature

Severe tiredness or exhaustion

Chills or sweats

Aches and headaches

Dry, persistent cough

Loss of appetite

Flu comes on very suddenly—often within hours—and can leave you feeling completely wiped out.

🦠 How Does Flu Spread? 🤧

Flu viruses spread very easily, especially during the winter months. Here are the most common ways they pass from person to person:

🔹 Breathing in droplets
When someone coughs or sneezes nearby, tiny infected droplets can be inhaled.

🔹 Close contact with someone who has the flu
Even a quick conversation or shared space can be enough.

💡 Did you know?
People can be contagious before they even realise they’re ill, which is why prevention — like good hand hygiene, covering coughs, staying home when unwell, and getting your flu jab — is so important.

🤧 What Causes Colds and Flu? 🤒

Colds and flu are both caused by viruses, but they come from different types:

🟦 Common Cold
→ Most often caused by rhinoviruses, but hundreds of different viruses can trigger cold-like symptoms.
This is why it’s completely normal to catch several colds in one winter — especially for children, whose immune systems are still developing.

🟧 Flu (Influenza)
→ Caused by influenza viruses A and B.
Flu tends to come on suddenly and can make you feel much more unwell than a cold.

💡 Tip: Good hand hygiene, staying warm, and keeping your immune system supported can help reduce your risk — but viral infections are still very common during winter.
