Walking is a great way to get active and make a difference to your health. It's also easy to fit into your day – even if you don't have a lot time. In honour of National Walking Day, here are 6 interesting, and surprising, health benefits to walking.

⚕️ 1: Just 11 minutes of brisk walking per day lowers the risk of an early death, according to researchers at the University of Cambridge. The researchers looked at more than 196 peer-reviewed studies, covering over 30 million people, and found it also reduced the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases.

🚶 2: Moving regularly benefits your whole body, easing muscle pain and stiffness, as well as helping your balance, which can prevent you from falling and injuring yourself.

😃 3: Walking boosts your energy and mood. The increased blood flow helps oxygen and nutrients move around your body, making you feel more alert and refreshed. It can also release natural chemicals that make you feel happy and positive, like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins.

🌳 4: A morning walk outside, where you’re exposed to sunlight, helps maintain your natural body clock. Walking can also help you relax and reduce stress, which can disrupt your sleep.

🧠 5: When you walk, there’s an increased flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients to your brain. This also helps specific proteins to be released, which stimulates the growth of new brain cells and connections. This can help your memory and brain to work better.

🩸 6: Several studies have shown that walking at a brisk pace can increase the white blood cells in your blood, which can help boost your immune system.

⚠️Risks of Co***ne use⚠️

Co***ne may seem like a popular party drug to some people, but it comes with a lot of risks that can affect your mind and body 🙅‍♀️ Long-term use can lead to a lot of physical problems and can impact your personal life.

⚡Short term effects – increased heart rate, nausea, restlessness
⚡Long-term Effects – heart & lung problems, seizures, neurological issues, nose and mouth damage
⚡Psychological effects – anxiety & paranoia, depression, irritability, aggression
⚡Other effects in your personal life – financial, relationship & legal troubles

Whilst the pure form of co***ne is risky enough, it is often cut with other substances and chemicals – this means the user is often unaware of what exactly is in the drug, so you can never be sure of what its exact effects will be. Remember, start low, go slow! 🐌

"It became clear to me that I needed to be closer to Dad in order to support him. He’s not one to ask for help, but I couldn’t bear the thought of him struggling alone without proper provisions in place to keep him safe and comfortable.

So in May, I made the long journey from New Zealand to the UK. I didn’t know how long I’d stay for.

It was clear when I arrived in the UK that Dad was no longer coping. The house was a mess, his clothes were dirty, the garden was overgrown and he had bluffed his way through with his friends and neighbours.

I discovered this was something he was very good at – rehearsing quick responses to questions that conceal his memory issues and confusion. He had also been doing this on our phone calls when I was in New Zealand. Like I said, fiercely independent."

Simon, who has lived in New Zealand for two decades, discusses how he cares for his dad who has Alzheimer’s disease and lives alone in the UK: https://www.dementiauk.org/information-and-support/stories/caring-for-dad-from-near-and-afar/?utm_campaign=story&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social
