Living longer is one thing. Living better is another.
If you want to feel sharper, move better, and stay active into later life, it’s time to build your healthspan toolkit. Here are six strategies supported by emerging science - many rooted in ancient wisdom - and how chiropractic fits into the picture.
⏲️ Intermittent fasting: This has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, support cellular repair processes like autophagy, and reduce inflammation. Studies have demonstrated that time-restricted feeding can positively impact body weight, blood pressure, and lipid profiles (Patterson et al., 2015).
❄️ Cold exposure: Cold exposure, such as cryotherapy or cold-water immersion, activates brown adipose tissue and improves mitochondrial function. It has been associated with reduced muscle soreness, enhanced immune response, and improvements in mood through endorphin release (Bleakley et al., 2014)
🌡️ Sauna use: Sauna bathing offers cardiovascular benefits comparable to moderate physical activity. Regular sauna use has been linked to reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, and all-cause mortality (Laukkanen et al., 2015). It also supports detoxification and heat shock protein activation.
🌳 Forest bathing: Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), a practice originating in Japan, has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and increase parasympathetic activity. It enhances natural killer cell activity by up to 50%, strengthening immune surveillance (Li, 2010).
🥬Gut health: Microbiome modulation - through diet, probiotics, and lifestyle - can dramatically impact inflammation and mental health. A 2016 study found that probiotic supplementation in Alzheimer’s patients significantly improved cognitive function and metabolic markers (Kobayashi et al., 2016).
🏋️♀️ Strength and mobility: Crucial for healthy aging and preventing frailty. One of the most pressing concerns in the context of aging and longevity is sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia is a strong predictor of frailty, disability, and mortality. Chronic low-grade inflammation accelerates muscle wasting and undermines physical resilience.
Chiropractic care, with its focus on spinal health, neuro-musculoskeletal function, and whole-person wellness, is uniquely suited to contribute to longevity science. Chiropractors can offer:
✔️ Functional movement assessments and manual therapies that preserve mobility and prevent musculoskeletal degeneration.
✔️ Education and support for anti-inflammatory lifestyle practices.
✔️ Strategies for stress reduction and autonomic balance through nervous system regulation.
✔️ Referrals and collaborations with other professionals in integrative health to ensure comprehensive care.
Chiropractic is not merely reactive care for back pain; it is an essential component of a proactive, preventative, and participatory model of healthcare.
'Chiropractic, Longevity, and the Lifestyle Revolution: Reframing 21st Century Healthcare' by Dr Faye Deane, explores the intersection between longevity science, lifestyle medicine, and chiropractic practice, with emphasis on inflammation, the gut-brain axis, and the evolving role of chiropractors in public health.
We’re living longer than ever before. But are we living better?
While life expectancy increases, healthspan—the years we live in good health—is shrinking.
Our current healthcare model is built for crisis management, not prevention. It waits for disease instead of working to prevent it. And it rarely addresses the underlying causes: inflammation, stress, lifestyle mismatch, and system breakdown.
Chronic inflammation has become the hidden engine behind many of today’s most common diseases - from arthritis to Alzheimer's. But this isn’t inevitable. It’s a response to modern living: ultra-processed diets, sedentary routines, disrupted sleep, and chronic stress.
Here’s where chiropractic enters the conversation.
As a profession rooted in whole-person, neuro-musculoskeletal health, chiropractic is uniquely positioned to lead the lifestyle and longevity revolution.
Chiropractors:
◾Address root causes, not just symptoms
◾Help patients manage stress and inflammation
◾Support nervous system regulation
◾Guide sustainable lifestyle changes
◾Collaborate across disciplines for whole-person care
Chiropractic care isn’t just for back pain, it’s a preventative, proactive model of health. It helps people thrive, not just survive.
In this new Knowledge Hub article, Dr Faye Deane, explores the intersection between longevity science, lifestyle medicine, and chiropractic practice, with emphasis on inflammation, the gut-brain axis, and the evolving role of chiropractors in public health.
Chiropractors across the UK are already delivering high-quality care to thousands of people with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions — but they’re still not included in the NHS MSK pathway.
This is despite clear evidence and WHO guidance that recognises chiropractors as Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), alongside physiotherapists and osteopaths.
With NHS waiting times for MSK treatment stretching up to 24 weeks, people are left in pain for months - unable to work, manage day-to-day activities, or get back to doing what they love. Businesses are losing productivity, and the system is under huge strain.
Here’s what we know:
🟢 Chiropractic care improves return-to-work outcomes
🟢 It reduces recurrence of MSK disability
🟢 Chiropractors already have the capacity to treat over 200,000 people per year
By integrating chiropractors into the NHS MSK strategy, we can help patients access effective care sooner - without adding to the pressure on GPs and hospitals.
It’s time for a change.
Let us know what you think:
💬 Have you or someone you know had to wait too long for MSK care?
💬 Would you like to see more choice and faster access to care in the NHS?

From years of university-level training to delivering regulated, evidence-informed care, chiropractors are MSK (musculoskeletal) specialists dedicated to improving movement, mobility, and overall health across the UK.
Chiropractic is a highly regulated healthcare profession, with extensive research supporting its safety and effectiveness. In the UK, chiropractors are legally regulated and must follow strict codes of practice - just like doctors and dentists. This regulation ensures consistency in education, high standards of training, and protection for patients using this protected title.
BCA chiropractors go beyond hands-on care. They integrate cognitive and lifestyle-based interventions, offering personalised advice on work, exercise, and daily habits to support long-term recovery. They also use functional rehabilitation and spinal stabilisation programmes to address persistent problems and reduce the risk of recurrence.
To become a chiropractor in the UK, students complete a four-year full-time Master’s Degree at one of the accredited universities in the country. BCA members take this commitment a step further, completing post-registration training with the Royal College of Chiropractors.
Chiropractic training covers a comprehensive range of medical knowledge and clinical skills, including:
This breadth of training allows chiropractors to take a whole-person approach and tailor care to each individual. There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment; every care plan is guided by the patient’s needs, preferences, and expectations.
As most chiropractic care is delivered in private practice, patient choice is paramount, and clinicians can utilise a full range of tools and techniques, without the limitations often found in other care settings -when clinically appropriate.

Considering chiropractic care, but not sure what to expect?
Whether it’s your first visit or you’re coming back after some time, we know new experiences can come with questions. That’s why we’ve put together a clear, step-by-step guide to help you feel informed, confident, and ready.
From consultation to personalised care plans — here’s what happens when you visit a chiropractor.
1. Health History & Consultation
Your chiropractor will begin by discussing your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms. They’ll ask about previous injuries, daily activities, and any treatments you’ve tried.
This helps them understand the possible causes of your discomfort and determine whether chiropractic care is right for you.
2. Physical Examination
A thorough physical exam follows, assessing:
- Posture and spinal alignment
- Range of motion and flexibility
- Muscle strength and imbalances
- Reflexes and neurological function
3. Further tests (if needed)
If necessary, your chiropractor may recommend imaging tests, such as X-rays, to get a clearer picture of your spinal health.
These tests help rule out underlying conditions that may require a different approach to treatment.
4. Discussion of Findings & Care Plan
Once the assessment is complete, your chiropractor will explain their findings and recommend a tailored treatment plan. This may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Soft tissue therapy
- Postural advice
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
They’ll also discuss how many sessions may be needed and answer any questions you have.
5. First Treatment
In many cases, the first treatment session takes place that same day.
The most common technique used is spinal manipulation (also called an adjustment), where the chiropractor applies controlled pressure to specific joints to restore movement and relieve tension.
6. Self-care and Next Steps
Your chiropractor may provide lifestyle recommendations, exercises, or ergonomic advice to support your recovery. They’ll also schedule follow-up visits to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to your care plan.
It’s Chiropractic Awareness Week – and we’re celebrating 100 years of chiropractic care in the UK!
For a century, chiropractors have helped people feel better, move more, and live fuller lives. From relieving pain to restoring mobility, our profession has always been about supporting healthier, more active communities. And today, we’re more ready than ever to make a difference.
With NHS MSK waiting times reaching up to 24 weeks, we have the skills and capacity to treat an additional 200,000 patients a year – helping people recover faster and return to work sooner. The potential impact? An incredible £399 million in productivity gains annually – and that figure could reach £873 million by 2028.
As the UK’s largest body of regulated chiropractors, we’re proud of how far we’ve come – and even more excited for what’s ahead. This week is a celebration of our legacy, our leadership, and our future as a vital part of mainstream healthcare.
Here’s to 100 years of progress, and many more to come. Join us in celebrating by using and tagging us so we can amplify your message.
