New figures show that opioids continue to drive the majority of drug misuse deaths in Wales, prompting renewed warnings about the significant harms associated with these substances.

Professor Rick Lines, Head of the Substance Misuse Programme at Public Health Wales, said: "Drug-related deaths remain far more common in our most deprived communities. This shows the need for wider action on housing, poverty and health inequalities alongside the work of specialist drug services."

Services like Dan 24/7 are vital in offering advice and support for queries about drugs or alcohol. Advisors are available 24 hours a day 365 days a year to answer questions and offer advice by calling 0808 808 2234 or email - dan@helpline.wales.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. The average number of patients in hospital with norovirus each day last week rose to over 1,000 for the first time this winter.

It can spread very easily, but washing your hands frequently with soap and water is the best way to stop it spreading. If you catch it, stay at home until two days after the symptoms stop. Donโ€™t visit hospitals or care homes during this time.

Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

Following the recent news regarding the Outbreak of Meningitis in Kent, we are getting an increasing number of queries regarding patients' vaccination status. If you require information relating to this, please email the surgery with your request and this will be processed accordingly however please be aware these requests can take up to 28 working days to process.

The MenB vaccine was only introduced into the routine UK childhood vaccination schedule in 2015. It is currently offered to babies at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 12โ€“13 months of age.

There is no other NHS vaccination programme for children over the age of 2 or for adults. However the MenB vaccine may be available privately. For further information, please refer to the Public Health Wales website.

Itโ€™s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia as serious illness can take place quickly. Anyone with symptoms should call NHS 111 or in an emergency dial 999 to seek medical attention.
